HERMISTON, Ore. – In the first outdoor meet of the 2017 campaign, the EOU
track and field team battled unattached athletes, as well as athletes from Oregon Tech, College of Idaho, and Treasure Valley Community College at Kennison Field in Hermiston on Saturday.
Despite it being the first outdoor meet, a variety of Mountaineers put up times and totals to not only take first place, but to place in the record books and notch NAIA standard marks.
Sophomore Jebarri Cumberbatch set new personal bests at the 100m and 200m dash, carding new record placements and a pair of qualifiers for the Christ Church, Barbados native. In the 100m, Cumberbatch etched a time of 10.59 for third in the EOU record books. In the 200m, the sophomore put up 21.41 for second place all-time.
EOU scored a pair of NAIA ‘B’ standards with senior Harley McBride in the women’s high jump with a jump of 1.65m and sophomore Kolton Cobb qualified with a men’s javelin toss of 56.80m.
Both the men’s and the women’s 4x100m relay teams placed in the school record books. The men’s team of Cumberbatch, sophomore Shemar Goodridge, junior Zac Hatfield and freshman Porter Cline chalked up 42.53 for fourth all-time at EOU. The women’s 4x100m relay team of junior Haley White, freshman Payton Jolley, sophomore Morgan Reddington and senior Kendall Current dashed a 49.08 finish for first in the meet and tenth all-time.
In the triple jump, Jolley took second with a leap of 10.32m for ninth all-time. Meanwhile, White took first in both the 100 and 400 hurdles with times of 15.47 and 1:05.82 respectively. White took third all-time in the 100 and ninth all-time in the 400.
Current took first place in the women’s 100m (12.55) and 200m (25.84), while Jolley took third in the 100m (13.21) and freshman Elizabeth Herbes took second in the 200m (26.44). In the 400m, Herbes took first with a time of 59.26, while junior Faith Homer (2:27.42) and freshman Alexa Jones (2:35.19) took second and third in the 800m.
The 4x400 relay of Current, Herbes, sophomore Katie Emerson and sophomore Paige Dodd took first with a time of 4:11.64, Dodd also took second in the high jump (1.59m). Reddington (5.28m) and Jolley (4.92m) went No. 1 and No. 2 in the long jump, while sophomore Elizabeth McCarty (36.88m) and junior Liz Ayers (36.66m) took first and second in the javelin.
Finishing just two spots behind Cumberbatch for third in the men’s 100m and 200m was Goodridge with times of 11.24 and 22.87. In the 400m, sophomore Devin Lewis-Allen took first with a time of 50.36, as sophomore Thomas Morrell III took third. While senior Nic Maszk took second in the 1500m (4:05.51), sophomore Lane Inwards took third in the 800m (2:00.57).
Taking first and third in the 5000m was sophomore Jakob DeWald and sophomore Jack Howard with times of 15:33.25 and 16:39.95. The 4x400 relay team of Morrell, sophomore Cooper Shaw, junior Josh Wallin and freshman Dustin Zimmerly took first with a time of 3:27.00. Finally, freshman Lucas Hidalgo swiped second in the pole vault with 4.30m, while senior Jeremiah Woods (47.34m) grabbed second in the hammer throw and freshman Jakob Sandhagen went third in the discus throw (40.18m).
