EOU Men Outrun Ranked Opponent, Women Hit PRs in Lewiston

LEWISTON, Idaho – Running in enormous races with over 150 runners on each side, the No. 8 men’s cross country team outraced No. 5 Lewis-Clark State, while the young women’s team continued its progress with multiple personal records on Saturday at the Inland Empire Meet.
 
The men’s team finished sixth of out of 17 teams, which included NCAA Division I programs Gonzaga, Washington State and Boise State. The Mountaineers were the top-finishing program from the NAIA with 214 points, defeating three NCAA Division II schools along with No. 5 LCSC, the host team.
 
Junior Thomas Morrell III led the team, placing 22nd overall in his best race of the year. Morrell crossed the finish line in 25 minutes and one second. Senior Lane Inwards took 35th and second on the team with a time of 25:18, a PR for the second-straight meet of four seconds.
 
Transfer Hunter Kratz was the team’s third finisher in 50th place in 25:39, recording a PR by 14 seconds. Junior Dustin Zimmerly followed behind in 60th in 25:49, while freshman Robie Swanson all hit a PR of four seconds, taking 82nd in 26:11 to round out the team’s scorers.
 
Freshman Braxton Wilson finished in 96th with a time of 26:35. He was followed closely behind by sophomore Hunter Schiess in 99th in 26:39.
 
Freshman Michelle Herbes led the EOU women’s team once again, placing 59th in 18:58 as the team took 14th overall. Junior Amanda Welch was the team’s second finisher in 80th place with a time of 19:29. Sophomore Megan Boals had a lifetime PR by eight seconds, crossing the finish line in 82nd place in 19:32.
 
Freshman Katie Jo Gebhardt took 94th in 19:40, followed closely by fellow freshman Molly Gulden, who set a 20-second personal record in 19:42 to take 96th.
 
Freshman Maliah Russell had the team’s largest PR of the night of 55 seconds from just two weeks prior, finishing with a time of 21:54.
 
The Mountaineers are back in action next week at the Warrior Invitational in Rocklin, Calif.
