Providence Earns 2-1 Road Win at C of I
CALDWELL, Idaho – A late College of Idaho flurry came up one goal short, as the University of Providence spoiled the Coyotes home opener, with the Argos claiming a 2-1 victory at Simplot Stadium.
UP (6-4, 4-2 CCC) built a two-goal lead early in the second half, but the Yotes battled back and had a chance for the equalizer inside the final 30 seconds of play.
Less than a minute into the match, outside back Dylan Bird played a long ball behind the defense – finding the hard-charging George Holloway, who drove a low right-footed shot into the right corner of the net.
C of I looked to have tied the score in the eighth minute – but a Ben Bechor goal was wiped off the books after an offside call. Five minutes later, Jack O'Leary played a pretty ball to Cole Fuller, but his solid header was snared by Argos keeper Marc Girones.
UP extended the lead in the 52nd minute – as the C of I defense failed to clear a ball off the end line, with the pass finding the boot of Alex Williams – who one-timed a shot from the top of the box into the net.
Bechor got the Yotes within a goal with a strike in the 61
st minute – getting a pretty cross from Andrew Lauritzen just outside the 6-yard-box and touching home his first goal of the year.
C of I continued the pressure – as Ahmet Huremovic was turned away by Girones in the 84th minute and Bechor was stuffed on a 25-yard strike in the 89th. Girones made a costly mistake with 28 seconds left, earning a caution for delay of game just inside the box – giving the Yotes an indirect free kick. Adam Prskavec took the attempt, but his 16-yard drive missed just high.
The visitors held a slight 13-10 edge in shots – with Girones making five saves in the win. C of I keeper Parker Billings had six saves – three of them from point-blank range – in the defeat.
The match was physical, as the teams combined for 40 fouls and four cautions – with the Argos whistled for 29 infractions.
C of I returns to action on Sunday, hosting Carroll College at Noon.
