EUGENE, Ore. – For the first time this season the Northwest Christian University women’s basketball team lost to an unranked opponent, falling to Corban University, 84-71.
Corban proved to be the dominant force all evening, shooting 54% from the field including a remarkable 8-for-11 clip from three-point range. At the same time, NCU was unable to get anything going, missing ten of their first 12 shots and eventually shooting 30% for the contest.
Head Coach Heath Alexander said, “We didn’t come ready to play tonight and Corban simply played better. They played tougher than us in every aspect of the game.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Maci Bozett with 32 points as she shot 9-for-11 from the field, 4-for-4 from three-point range and 10-for-10 at the free-throw line. Jordan Woodvine added 17 points and seven rebounds while Emily Yost scored ten with a team-high nine rebounds. Hannah Shore came off the bench to score ten also.
The Beacons had four starters in double-figures led by a 14-point, seven-rebound, three-block night by freshman Anamaria Virjoghe. Morgan McKinney scored 12 and Niki Duncan added ten points along with a game-high five steals.
Trailing by 20 points late in the third quarter, senior Katerina Brejchova almost single-handedly brought NCU back into the game. The Point-Forward scored 11 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Beacons cut the deficit to ten in the final minute. Brejchova added eleven rebounds for the double-double.
Corban closes out their regular season at 13-14 overall with a 9-11 record in Cascade Collegiate Conference action and they have secured at least a tie for sixth place in the CCC standings.
The Beacons, who still have a pair of games remaining this weekend against last-place Walla Walla University, move to 20-5, 13-5 in conference. They can secure third place with one victory over the weekend. NCU will first take on the Wolves at 1:00 pm on Friday and then again at 7:30 pm on Saturday night.
