CALDWELL, Idaho – Pounding out 28 runs on 29 hits, the College of Idaho opened their home softball season with a pair of run-rule victories over Willamette University at Symms Field.

The Lady Yotes (8-2) earned a 12-1 win in the opener and used an 11-run second inning to cruise to a 16-3 victory in the nightcap.

Colette Robert handcuffed the Division III Bearcats (0-2) in the opener, allowing three hits and striking out seven for her fifth win. She allowed a single first inning run and let just one other WU runner reach third base the rest of the way.

C of I broke the game open early, as Jordan Maddox slammed a three-run homer in the first inning, her fourth of the season, with Kylie Smith adding a run-scoring double. Smith added a two-run triple in a three-run second to make it 7-1, with the Yotes batting around for five more in the third, as Smith drove in two with a double.

Smith finished 3-for-3 with four RBI, Maddox was 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Lacie Miller, Kristin Paulazzo and Courtney Ellis all had two hits.

The big rally in Game 2 was keyed by Marissa Maddox, who led off the frame with a solo homer, adding a three-run shot later in the inning. Paulazzo had a two-run double – as a pair of costly errors led to seven unearned runs.

WU broke through for three runs in the fourth, before C of I slammed the door shut in the bottom of the inning on the strength of a long Martha Tooley grand slam.

Ali Longoria worked around four walks – allowing just one hit – to earn her first win. Delaney Atkins and Ellis each had two hits for the Yotes.

The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with a noon single game.
