Cavs Rally to Defeat Eagles After Delay
PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia came back after a one hour game delay for a 14 run inning as the Cavaliers defeated the Eagles 15-6 in five innings this morning. Temperatures were in the 40's with rain falling at times.
The game had to be delayed for a hour in the second inning when a trespasser came onto the field and had to be detained and escorted off the field by Portland police. Teams and coaching staffs were safely led away while the incident was taking place.
Northwest U had taken a 5-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and NU pitcher, Rachel Hawley, had allowed no hits up to the delay. The Eagles scored their first run in the first inning when Sammi Caron led off with a triple to right center and scored when Yeawa Asabi came through with a single to center field. Following the delay, Mikayla Wells walked and Sammi Caron singled to get on base. Darian Godfrey then doubled scoring Wells and Caron, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Asabi then came to bat and homered down the left field line to give NU a 5-0 lead.
Concordia then erupted for a 14 run second inning coming up with 7 hits to take the lead. Two of the big hits in the inning was a three run double by Samantha Byron and a two run single by Kayla Lagerquist. Eagles’ pitcher Rachel Hawley was relieved by Stephanie Granger with Hawley giving up 11 runs and Granger allowing 3 runs in the inning.
Yeawa Asabi picked up another RBI in the NU half of the 4th inning when she hit a sacrifice fly to left center allowing Sammi Caron to score from third base after she had singled earlier in the inning.
The Cavaliers pushed their lead to 15-6 in the 4th inning when Macy Besuyen tripled to drive in Elena Cook who had reached base on a fielder’s choice.
NU would fail to not be able to score in the 5th inning, ending the game on the 8 run rule.
Yeawa Asabi had another big day for Northwest U (1-6) at the plate going 2 for 2 and driving in 4 RBI. Darian Godfrey was 1 for 3, scored a run and added two RBI for the game. Sammi Caron was 3 for 3 and scored 3 runs. Rachel Hawley took the loss in the circle for the Eagles going 1.1 innings, giving up 11 runs on 4 hits.
Concordia (10-6) was led by Macy Besuyen’s 3 for 3 day with 3 RBI and scoring 3 times. Samantha Byron was 1 for 2, scored twice and drove in 3 runs. Kayla Lagerquist got the win in relief pitching 3.1 innings while giving up 1 run on 2 hits. She also helped her cause going 1 for 3 from the plate with 3 RBI.
Next Up: The Eagles open Cascade Conference play next week when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to take on Northwest Christian on March 2 and 3 on the Beacons home field.
