College Place, Wash. – In their home opener, the Walla Walla University men's soccer team fell 7-2 to the
Soka University (Calif.) Lions Sunday afternoon at College Place High School. For the second match in a row, the Wolves found themselves down at halftime to another California Pacific Conference team.
After giving up two goals via fast breaks in the first five minutes of the match, the Wolves (0-1) looked to counter this early attack by the Lions (0-1), but could not find the back of the net to cut into the Lions lead. The Wolves would give up two more goals in the 11
th and 24
th minute to put them in a 4-0 halftime deficit.
Coming out of halftime the Wolves looked to control the ball and be under attack to put themselves back in the match, but were unable to cut into their halftime deficit. After giving up two goals to open the second half, the Wolves found the back of the net on a beautiful cross from
Emmett Semple (Corvallis, Ore. / Corvallis HS) to
Carlos Cantu (Hidalgo, Texas / Idea Pharr College Prep) to cut the Lions lead to five.
The Lions were able to score an equalizer two minutes later pushing the lead back to six in the 66
th minute. The Wolves would soon find the net again, as Emmett
Semple scored off a penalty shot in the 74
th minute.
Walla Walla would eventually fall to the Lions, 7-2, bringing their record to 0-2. Against the Lions, the Wolves finished in deficits of 16-6 in shots and 11-2 in shots on goal. The Wolves were led by
Emmett Semple and his one goal and assist.
