No. 14 Warrior Women’s Basketball Topples No. 7 Carroll College, 65-56
SALEM, Ore. – The No. 14-ranked Corban University women's basketball team faced off against another opponent from the state of Montana on Thursday afternoon. The Warriors downed Carroll College, the No. 7-ranked team at the NAIA Division I level, by a final score of 65-56 in their first official home game of the young season.
The triumph came in front of a near-capacity crowd at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, with over 500 elementary students packing the seats for Corban's annual 'Field-Trip Game.'
"This was a great team win where we competed for 40 minutes against a very good Carroll team," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "Defense and rebounds were big, especially in the second half."
The Navy and Gold began the game with some jitters on the offensive end, turning the ball over 11 times in the first quarter. However, the Warriors would settle in nicely, notching just 12 in the remaining 30 minutes.
From the field, the Warriors were heavily reliant upon Jordan Woodvine and Shawnie Spink, who combined to hoist up 31 out of the team's 53 total shots. The duo excelled in the triumph, combining to put up a total of 46 points in the bout.
Woodvine's 31 points would lead the charge for the Warriors, as she shot an outstanding 10-of-18 (55.6%) in the game. She also added 10 rebounds in the performance, netting her second double-double of the season.
Spink was the long-range deadeye in the triumph, as she knocked down four trifectas (4-of-8) to help her tally 15 points. The guard was also active and strong on the boards for Corban, cleaning the glass for seven rebounds.
The Fighting Saints struggled to find a rhythm in the matchup, as they had a meager 28.1% field-goal percentage on the afternoon. Carroll's Christine Denny picked up 17 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, and was the Saints' top performer.
In addition to the Warriors' stark advantage in field-goal percentage, the Navy and Gold also maintained a 10-rebound advantage over Carroll—led by Woodvine (10), Kendra Murphy (9), and Spink (7). Corban had 48 rebounds in comparison to the Saints' 38.
Now at 3-3, Corban will be looking to stack up back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they host Simpson University tomorrow night, with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
