ASHLAND – Seeking its first-ever team title, College of Idaho jumped in front on Day 1 of the Cascade Conference Men’s Track and Field Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Friday at Raider Stadium.
The Yotes got a pair of All-CCC performances, including a shot-put championship, from senior Josh Brown and scored 18 points in the 10,000-meter race for a total of 98 ½. Southern Oregon stands in second with 81 points after claiming three titles, including Zach Beltz’s fourth in a row and meet record in the long jump, and newcomer British Columbia collected three victories for 71 points.
Saturday’s events begin at 11 a.m. A chronological recap of Friday’s action is below:
LONG JUMP: Already the first individual to win three consecutive long-jump titles, SOU’s Zach Beltz completed a career sweep with a mark of 25 feet 10 inches – setting a new meet record by more than a foot. C of I picked up 17 points in the event, led by second-place Kristopher Kostelecky (22-6 ½) and third-place Kendrick Caldwell (22-1).
HAMMER THROW: With a season-best of 202-5, UBC freshman Rowan Hamilton debuted at the CCC meet with a hammer title and his Thunderbirds teammate, Sebastian Yep, easily placed second at 194-4. C of I’s Josh Brown was the third (170-2) all-conference honoree.
3,000-METER STEEPLECHASE: A pair of Northwest Christian seniors, Conner Cover (9:35.51) and Dan Carrier (9:38.37), stole the steeple show in the Beacons’ most lucrative event. A freshman, C of I’s Bryce Odegard, became an All-CCC performer with a third-place finish in 9:47.48.
HIGH JUMP: Josh Washington – a midseason addition to SOU’s roster after playing for the Raider basketball team – stole the high jump title by an inch by clearing a season-best 6-5 as the No. 7 seed. Multnomah’s Brett Blackstock, another CCC basketball standout, was the runner-up at 6-4, and C of I’s Kristopher Kostelecky won a tiebreaker for third place over teammate Nate Griswold after both cleared 6-2 ¾.
SHOT PUT: In his second All-CCC effort of the day, C of I senior Josh Brown notched an NAIA ‘B’ mark of 50-4 ½ to win the title. SOU’s Kevin Tunnell (49-10) claimed second for the second year in a row, and defending champion Chase Van Wyck (49-7 ¼) of EOU took third.
4x100-METER RELAY: SOU won the 4x100 for the fourth year in a row and the ninth time in 10 seasons, clearing the NAIA ‘B’ standard in the process as Eli Chapman, Chris Rosero, Will Gross and Zach Beltz clocked in at 41.78. Second-place Oregon Tech (41.96) also recorded a ‘B’, and NCU (42.24) snuck into third.
1,500 METERS: Three UBC runners were among the top-seven in the 1,500 nationally coming into the weekend, but their champion, No. 5-seeded Rhys Kramer (3:52.36), wasn’t one of them. They took the top-three spots at Kieran Lumb (3:54.76) and Tanner Geary (3:57.28) came in next to make it a 20-point race.
110-METER HURDLES: Top-seeded Kenneth Schultze of UBC performed as advertised, winning the title in 14.62 to edge out runner-up Rhett Gonzalez (14.77) of SOU. UBC’s Bogdan pavel (14.87) was third, and the next two finishers were Raiders Bryce Goggin (15.20) and Justin Hall (15.74).
400 METERS: Last year’s runner-up, Angel Valdez of OIT, delivered a 400 championship for the Owls in 48.81, and last year’s third-place finisher, EOU’s Devin Lewis-Allen (49.20), moved up to second place to repeat as an All-CCC performer. UBC’s British Columbia (49.33) edged out NCU’s Oregon Johnson (49.97) for the No. 3 spot.
10,000 METERS: Despite entering the race as a no-time wild card, Northwest’s Riley Sine cleared the field by seven second in 32:12.69 for first place. C of I scored 18 points and took the next two All-CCC spots with Marcos Cervantes (32:19.83) – the runner-up for the second year in a row – and Cole Campbell (32:31.91).
