NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene pulled away with three goals in the second half to defeat the College of Idaho 3-0 in a women's soccer exhibition on Saturday night.

BOX SCORE

The Nighthawks had 12 shots on goal for the contest, with the Yotes finishing with three for the match. Freshmen Cheyanne Rede, Brynna Herridge and Payton Mongelli tallied the shots on goal for C of I.

It was a scoreless stalemate on the pitch until the 55th minute, when Rikki Myers found Sierra Sanchez to get NNU on the board first.

Myers would go on to score a goal of her own of the unassisted variety in the 89th minute, with Hailey Hockett finding the net in the 61st minute off a Sanchez assist.

"NNU looked strong," said head coach Brian Smith. "They are a week into camp, so I anticipate they are going to have a good season. They caused us a lot of problems that we are certainly going to see on film and that we saw during the course of the game. I think we lick our wounds a little today. Sometimes the score is not deserving or the outcome doesn't reflect the game and I think today it did. They were three goals better than we were today. They dominated in a lot of large portions. We have work to do."

Trailing late, the Yotes had multiple opportunities to chip into the lead, however could not capitalize.

"Down 2-0 with 10 minutes to go, I thought we created a couple chances that quite frankly could have gotten us almost equal in the game," Smith said. "We drew the penalty and then we had a shot just a short time after that was a little high. Sometimes soccer is strange that way. I think ultimately the outcome was the right outcome."

Four freshmen started for C of I against the Nighthawks, including Herridge, Mongelli, Rede and Chloe Teets.

"We've got such a young group," Smith said. "We are getting a lot of on the job training. We play these games for a reason. We want to play difficult opponents to kind of expose us and show our young group what it's going to take to be successful on a bigger stage against better opposition and today we got probably exactly what we deserved, but at the same time, I think it's a great, positive lesson to take out of it."

The Yotes host Pacific University out of Oregon on Aug. 30 to officially begin the 2019 season.
