Warriors take over in 2nd half to stop SOU's streak

ASHLAND – The Corban women's basketball team disrupted Southern Oregon with its size on both ends of the floor to score a key 74-53 victory in Cascade Conference play Friday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Warriors forwards Kendra Murphy and Shaelie Burgess both registered double-doubles and had matching 8-of-12 outings from the field, as Murphy totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds and Burgess went for 18 and 10 in a matchup of teams tied for second in the standings coming into the night.
Despite committing 22 turnovers, the Warriors (12-6 overall, 8-2 CCC) prevailed by shooting 49 percent from the field, assisting 21 of their 25 makes and playing stellar defense throughout. They took a 33-27 lead into halftime before holding the Raiders without a point for the first seven minutes of the third quarter – rattling off a 10-0 run to take over for good.
SOU fell to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in the CCC going into Saturday's 5:30 p.m. contest against first-place and 22nd-ranked Northwest Christian. The Raiders' winning streak ended at six games.
Syd'Nee Fryer recorded 15 points and six rebounds to lead the Raiders, pouring in 11 in the first quarter to give them an early 17-12 lead. The offensive production stalled thereafter, and they ended with a 31-percent clip from the field.
Shawnie Spink ran the show for the Warriors with nine points and eight assists. Jordan Woodvine added 10 points and four assists, and Fallon Hanson scored 11 off the bench.
Daranda Hinkey chipped in 10 points, four assists and two steals for SOU. Dominique Harding scored all eight of her points in the second half and collected four of the Raiders' 16 steals.
