REDDING, Calif. – After starting the season 2-0 last weekend, the Hustlin' Owls fell to 2-2 on the year with a pair of close losses (10-8 in game 1 vs Simpson and 16-9 in 10-innings against Holy Names) at the Simpson Tournament on Friday at Tiger Field.
Game 1 Simpson University 10 Oregon Tech 8
The Red Hawks started off the game with three runs in the first inning, earning a considerable lead. The Owls struggled to catch up, remaining scoreless in the second before making their first run in the third.
Simpson retaliated in the fourth with four more runs, sending them to a 7-1 advantage. Tech tallied another in the fifth before outscoring the Hawks 5-2 in the sixth to come within two runs of the lead.
But Oregon Tech would not make it – a 10
th run from the Red Hawks in the seventh put them up three and the Owls were held to only one run in the next two innings by Simpson defense as the team held out for the win.
Alex Malcolm added four hits for Tech, batting in three runs in the process. Micah Jio and Josiah Peterson added two hits each, with Peterson batting in two runs. Payton Harris scored two runs and made two hits himself.
Austen Salcedo led the Red Hawks with four hits, two runs batted in, and three runs. Andre Alvarez scored the game's only home run, batting in two for the team. Nathan Minami followed up with three runs batted in off of two hits.
The teams played a sloppy game, with the Owl's 10 errors only slightly higher than Simpson's seven.
Game 2 Holy Names 16 Oregon Tech 9 (10-innings)
The Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 1
st inning on 6-hits. Tech made it 6-0 with a one run in the bottom of the 3rd on a Josh Overstreet triple.
The Hawks scored 2-runs in the 4
th and 1-run in the seventh to cut the OIT lead to 6-3.
Back came the Hooter with 3-runs in the bottom of the 7
th highlighted by an Andy Schubert two-RBI single to give OIT a 9-3 lead. That would be all the scoring for the Owls in the game as Holy Names added 5-runs in 8
th, then tied the game at 9-9 with a single run in 9
th and then won the game with a huge 7-run 10
th inning for a 16-9 final.
HNU out-hit OIT 18-12 in the game.
Overstreet supplied 3-hits to lead the Owls with Josiah Peterson and Payton Harris adding 2-hits each in the loss.
The Owls will play the same two teams on Saturday with the first game against Simpson scheduled for a 10:00 am start and game two against Holy Names at 1:00 pm.
