GRANTS PASS Ore.— No. 19 Oregon Tech issued its 11th straight shutout dating back to last season as they beat NCAA DII Humboldt State University 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Dutch Bros. Sports Complex. Sunday's game was moved from Klamath Falls to Grants Pass because of poor air quality. The game counted for the Owls and moved their record to 2-0 on the season while the Jacks used the game as an exhibition.
"Today was a hard-fought win," said head coach
Casey Tate. "We had to fight to the end for the result against a good Humboldt team. The group stuck together and had such a spirit about them today. Very proud of the group."
The two teams took a little while to generate any offense as both defenses held strong early.
The Jacks got the first shot of the game in the ninth minute on a free kick from just outside the top of the 18 box; the shot sailed high off the foot of Baylee Groom.
Tech started to generate a little offense as a Kyra Cambra shot was denied by Humboldt State keeper Marisol Camargo.
Maddie Miller (#13 pictured) scored the game's only goal, her first of the year, in the 18
th minute, taking a great header pass by Karly Feis-White. The play was started by a free kick from the baseline just outside the 18 by Mehana Ortiz who hit the low liner that was sent the other way across the box with the header and finished right in front of the Jacks' goal as Miller scored in the lower right from point blank range.
The rest of the match was a stalemate with neither team able to find the net.
For the game, Humboldt held a slight 7-6 edge in shots while Tech had a 4-3 advantage in shots on frame.
