LA GRANDE, Ore. – Like they both did in 2021, Corban University’s Valerie Schmidt and Eastern Oregon University’ TJ Davis secured the conference title yet again. The duo won the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, at the 2022 CCC Multi-Event Championships, presented by U.S. Bank.
For Schmidt, she placed in the top-five of the final three events on day two and finished with 5,086 points. She ultimately finished 219 points ahead of second place and scored 10 points for the Warriors going into the CCC Championships that will take place in mid-May.
Schmidt was the overall points leader going into day two and never surrendered the lead at any point. She started the day with a third place finish in the long jump, leaping 17-11 ½. In the next event, javelin, Schmidt had her best finish of the day as she placed second. She chucked the metal spear 125-5 to place in the top three. In the final event, the 800-meter run, she clocked a 2:30.38 and placed fourth. The two-time CCC Champion now leads the NAIA with her 5,086 points.
Finishing second was Hassy Fashina-Bombata with 4,867 points. Grabbing the third place podium finish was Abi Stevens of Southern Oregon. She scored 4,673 points to place in the top-three. Fashina-Bombata and Stevens’ point totals currently rank second and third in the NAIA now, respectively.
In the decathlon, Davis coasted to his second consecutive CCC title. He had one win on day two and placed in the top-five in every event en route to finishing with 7,101 points for the overall win. His mark currently ranks second in the NAIA.
Davis’ lone win on the second day was in the first event in the 110-meter hurdles. He blew out the competition, running a 14.52, which was nearly two seconds ahead of second place. He placed second in the discus with a throw of 122-6. Davis grabbed another second place finish in the pole vault with a height clearance of 13-1 ½. His mark tied him for second with two other competitors. In the javelin, he was fifth with a throw of 145-6. Davis wrapped up day two with another first place finish in the 1,500-meter run. He clocked a 4:43.62 to finish up the day.
Finishing second in the decathlon was Thomas Dodgen of Oregon Tech. He finished with 6,341 total points to grab the runner-up spot. His point total currently ranks him fifth in the NAIA. Grabbing the third place finish was Christian Bothwell of Lewis-Clark State with 6,199 points. His mark currently ranks him in the top-10 of the NAIA as well at eighth.
The top-three finishers in the heptathlon and decathlon will be recognized at the 2022 CCC Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, in mid-May. This year’s conference meet will take place Friday-Saturday, May 13-14, and will be hosted by Southern Oregon University.
