LA GRANDE, ORE.- The Mountaineers looked to continue on their hot start as they took on The University of Jamestown at Community Stadium. Continuing the hot start is just what the Mounties did tonight as they were able to take a hard fought 2-1 victory, taking them to 3-0-0 in the young 2022 season. This 3-0-0 start is tied for the second best in school history.
The first half of today's match was a hard fought defensive battle. The Mounties had a number of good looks at the goal but were not able to find the back of the net. After 45 minutes of play both teams had accounted for just 5 shots a piece which is credited to the high level of defensive play by both teams.
As the second half kicked off the Mounties came out firing. The Mounties accounted for 13 total shots in the second half and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Carlos Murillo made a magnificent move and was able to break free and put one in the net. The lead for the Mounties did not last long as the Jimmies were able to fire right back as they tied the game at one a piece in the 56th minute. As the second half continued, the Mounties continued to put pressure on the Jimmies and were rewarded in the 83rd minute with a clutch goal by Kellen Burke on a great assist from Max Rose. This goal would ultimately be the game winner as the Mountaineers were able to hold off the Jimmies the rest of the way, taking the game, 2-1.
This 3-0-0 start is tied for the second best in school history and the Mounties will look to continue their winning ways as they will take on The University of Puget Sound on Friday, Sept. 9 and kick off is set for 1:00 P.M.
