Corban Women’s Soccer Drops First Match of 2024 Regular Season in Narrow Road Loss

NEWBERG, Ore. – Serving as the road team for just the second time this season, the Corban University Women's Soccer team was unable to wake up out off their nearly two-week long hiatus between contests this evening at the Austin Sports Complex, as NCAA DIII George Fox University jumped on the scoreboard early and rode their defensive efforts to a 1-0 victory over the Navy and Gold to send Corban into the loss column for the first time in 2024.

"Today showed us that when we don't play how we train, we will get punished," shared Warriors' head coach Travez Whyte. "But I'm super proud to see how we stepped it up and started playing our way in the second half, which created some really good chances. That was fun to watch! This opportunity will get us closer to being the best we can be as we continue to learn. As always, thanks to all our traveling Warriors who came out to support!"

Less than thirty minutes into the contest, the Bruins (2-0-0) scored what would stand as the game-winner on a failed clear attempt by the Warriors' (2-1-1) backline, allowing forward Alia Villa to score well inside the penalty box after being assisted by defender Alexis Breer.

Offensively, Corban was unable to get any momentum going throughout the entire first half, eventually being outshot 7-2 against GFU with an offense that averaged over 13 a game heading into tonight's matchup. The lack of offensive presence was eventually reversed in the second half when they outshot the Bruins 7-0, yet playing 45 minutes of offense wasn't enough after surrendering a first half goal.

Warriors' senior forward Fatima Jimenez led the Warriors in shots with a pair of opportunities this evening, one of which came on goal. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Ava Hayes accepted her first loss of the season against her record by allowing a single goal and hauling in a trio of saves.

For George Fox, Villa and forward Taylor Ho each had a pair of shots on their own attacking end, while goalkeeper Emily Robey collected a second shutout victory to start the season for George Fox.

The Warriors will take the week to prepare for a two-game road trip in eastern Washington, beginning with NCAA DIII Whitworth University on Saturday, September 14th in Spokane at 3pm.
