OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College defeated the University of Idaho club team 29-18 in men's wrestling on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Costantino Recreation Center. The Geoducks won three matches with falls, one match by a technical fall, and one match by forfeit. Evergreen improved to 1-2 on the season.
Winning matches by pinning their opponents were Horacio Godinez (So.), Orion Rhinehart (So.), and Cole Torres (Fr.). Godinez registered his fall 2:09 into the match with Henry Brewster of Idaho at 141 pounds. Godinez upped his record to 22-2 on the season. Rhinehart won the match at 157 pounds with a pin in the second period at 4:16 against Ryan Matysek of the Vandals. Torres prevailed at 184 pounds with a fall versus Ridge Kehr at 2:27.
The victory by Torres gave the Geoducks a 23-12 lead and clinched the team win for Evergreen. The Geoducks forfeited at 197 pounds and Idaho forfeited at 285 pounds.
Winning with a technical fall and a score of 28-9 was Alex Fenwick (Fr.) for Evergreen at 149 pounds. He defeated Caleb Burbank of Idaho. Savion Galloway (So.) won by forfeit for the Geoducks at 285 pounds.
In addition to receiving a forfeit win at 197 pounds, the Vandals won two matches by decisions. Kevin Martinez of Idaho downed Malachi Wallway (Jr.) of Evergreen 7-3 at 133 pounds. Garrett Madole won at 165 pounds for the Vandals, as he outscored Hassan Abdi (Jr.) 10-4.
The Geoducks will remain at home to host the Evergreen Open on Sunday, Jan. 18. The men's tournament will begin at 9 a.m. PST and the women's tournament will start at 10 a.m.
