Men's Basketball 2/16/2020 2:37:00 AM Iain Dexter, EOU Sports Information Director Mountaineers Clinch CCC Tourney Berth with Double-OT Win over Geoducks LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team officially clinched a berth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships with a 97-89 double-overtime victory over Evergreen State on Saturday's Senior Night in Quinn Coliseum. On a thrilling night when the Geoducks hit two game-tying three pointers at the end of regulation and the first overtime period, it was the Mountaineers (15-12, 9-9 CCC) who ultimately came out on top thanks to a 14-8 advantage in the second overtime. The Geoducks were looking for their first CCC win of the year and nearly got it, but just came up short of the upset of the Mountaineers. The win for EOU moved them into a three-way tie for fifth place with Northwest Christian and Warner Pacific, as the final two games will decide the final standings. On a night when the Mounties honored seniors Jarek Schetzle, Landon Jones and Brock Johnson, it was Schetzle who came through with a big game of 30 points and 13 rebounds. The NAIA's leader in shooting percentage went 13-for-17 from the floor in 44 minutes played. Jones was also instrumental, adding 21 points that included a highlight reel windmill dunk in overtime that helped put the game away. Junior Max McCullough had 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Jamal Heckard added 12 points, five assists and four steals. For the Geoducks, Gloire Biongo and LaBrandon Price each had 18 points and each hit the game-tying three pointers for Evergreen. HOW IT HAPPENED EOU got out to an early 16-7 lead and seemed in control over the winless Geoducks in the first six minutes. However, Evergreen battled back and tied the score 22-22 with 6:49 to play in the half. The Mounties managed to hold a four-point lead at 38-34 heading to halftime. Evergreen took its first lead of the game with 9:20 at 59-57, quickly turning it into a 65-57 advantage. The lead didn't last long as the Mountaineers tied the score at 70 with 3:42 to go, and then claiming a five-point lead after a Brandon Porter three-pointer. With 12 seconds left, Biongo sunk a three-pointer that eventually sent the game to overtime at 75-75. Both teams struggled offensively in the first overtime, but the Mounties found themselves ahead once again late at 83-80. With 16 seconds, Price hit a step-back three pointer to tie the score at 83, and the Geoducks got a stop on EOU's next possession to extend the game. Evergreen's fortune ran out in the second overtime, however, as EOU got ahead quickly by five. The Mounties continued to extend their lead out to eight points and then 10 at 97-87 with 35 seconds left, finally able to feel in control of the win.
