Men’s Basketball Falls Late, 89-79, to No. 2 Yotes

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball kept pace with No. 2-ranked College of Idaho, but ultimately fell 89-79 on Wednesday night in Cascade Conference play.

The Yotes (22-3, 15-0 CCC) led for most of the night, but found themselves in a dogfight to remain undefeated in conference play this season. The Mountaineers (11-12, 5-9) battled all night like they have all season, but couldn't contain the balanced Coyote attack.

Junior Max McCullough led EOU with 22 points, equaling the Yotes's Jalen Galloway for the game-high. Senior Jarek Schetzle had 16 points and eight rebounds in limited time due to foul trouble. Junior Brandon Porter had 13 points, senior Landon Jones added 10 and junior Andreas Brown scored eight off the bench. Jones and junior Jamal Heckard each tallied six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
EOU kept the score close all game, holding the deficit to just six points at halftime. After C of I got ahead by seven to start the half, the Mounties fought to tie the score 67-67 with 8:31 to play. The Yotes scored the next seven points to jump back ahead 74-67 with 6:55 to go.

The Mounties pulled back within three points, but got no closer as the Yotes went up by eight and eventually 11 points on a three with a minute remaining to put the game away.

Both teams shot close to the same percentage as C of I made 59.7 percent to the Mounties' 57.1. The Yotes made nine three pointers while EOU connected on eight, with each team making just over 42 percent.
