WVT Laboratory Players of the Week Announced

CORVALLIS, Ore. The following 11 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during the period September 27-Oct. 3, 2021.
 
Women’s Volleyball - Attacker
Southern Oregon University’s Hailey Van Well was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Attacker of the Week.
 
Van Well, a sophomore outside hitter from Dallas, Ore., helped the Raiders snap a seven-match losing streak with 5.00 kills per set over the weekend in back-to-back road wins. She had 19 kills (.444 attack percentage) at Warner Pacific University and followed with 16 kills (.424 hitting) at Multnomah University. Van Well finished the weekend hitting at a .435 clip.
 
Women’s Volleyball - Defender
Southern Oregon University’s Carol Melo was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week.
 
Melo, a sophomore middle blocker from Miguel Alves, Piauí, Brazil, went for a season-high 10 blocks Friday at Warner Pacific, then followed up with nine more Saturday at Multnomah as the Raiders completed a weekend sweep. She finished the weekend averaging 2.71 blocks per set.
 
Women’s Volleyball - Setter
No. 13-ranked Eastern Oregon University’s Alexis McMurtrey was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week for the second time this year.
 
McMurtrey, a freshman setter from Idaho Falls, Idaho, racked up 63 total assists in a pair of wins for the Mountaineers, averaging 7.00 assists per set. She posted a double-double on Friday against The Evergreen State College (29 assists, 14 digs) and averaged 2.33 digs per set over the weekend.
 
Women’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Northwest University’s Kierstin Patefield was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Patefield, a grad goalkeeper from Puyallup, Wash., made eight saves to grab a shutout on the road at Carroll College. She anchored the defense for 110 minutes, helping the Saints post a 0-0 draw.
 
Women’s Soccer – Offensive Player
Corban University’s Maria-Frances Serrant was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
 
Serrant, a freshman from the Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, was amongst the headliners this weekend as the Warriors set a program record on Saturday in their 14-0 win. She scored a hat trick on Saturday and assisted three other goals in the big win.
 
Men’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Oregon Tech’s Reilly Combs was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Combs, a sophomore defender from Oregon City, Ore., anchored the Hustlin’ Owl defense to help OIT grab two wins over the weekend. With Combs, the Owl defense allowed just four shots on goal in the two games to post two shutouts.

Men’s Soccer – Offensive Player
Corban University’s Reggie Reyes was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
 
Reyes, a junior forward from Woodburn, Ore., scored two goals and had two assists to help the Warriors grab two victories in CCC action over the weekend. He scored in Corban’s 2-1 win over Warner Pacific University before assisting twice and scoring another goal – on just one shot – in the Warriors’ 4-0 victory over Multnomah University.
 
Women’s Cross Country – Runner
Southern Oregon University’s Kayla Clayton was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
 
Clayton, a junior from Salinas, Calif., led No. 17-ranked SOU to a team win and upset of No. 11-ranked Lewis-Clark State College by topping a 73-person field Saturday at Bush's Pasture Park. She finished seven full seconds ahead of the runner-up, posting a 5K time of 18 minutes, 46.8 seconds.
 
Men’s Cross Country – Runner
Oregon Tech’s Mark French was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
 
French, a senior from Tualatin, Ore., led the Owls to a team championship in the 46th Charles Bowles Willamette Invite in the men’s 8K gold race to take second out of 119 runners in a time of 24:49.9.
 
Men’s Golf – Golfer
Lewis-Clark State College’s Devon Caruso was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
 
Caruso, a senior from Pomeroy, Wash., took first out of 54 golfers at the Warrior Invitational. He posted a three-round score of five-under-par 207 (71-65-71).
 
Women’s Golf – Golfer
Oregon Tech’s Payton Canon was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Golfer of the Week.
 
Canon, a senior from Greenwood Village, Colo., tied for first at the Warrior Invite with a two-round score of 145 (70-75) to help the Owls take second as a team.
