SPOKANE, Wash. - Mountaineer Women's Wrestling put together another solid performance on Sunday as they picked up a fourth place team finish at the Spokane Collegiate Open with 98.5 points. Helping Eastern Oregon place in the top-five as a team was eight individual placewinners, including one champion.
Taking home first place honors was
Morgan Shines at 130 pounds. Finishing second was
Krystal Fabricante at 136 pounds. Placing third was a handful of Mountaineers in
Nayeli Flores Roque (101),
Stephanie Blankenship (109),
Dempsi Talkington (155), and
Olivia Robinson (170). Rounding out the placewinners were
Mia Schreiner (101) and
Anjelynn Baron (123) in sixth place, respectively.
Shines' undefeated day was an impressive one as she posted a 4-0 record and surrendered just one point in her four wins. She started the day with a 9-0 decision over Anna Rodriguez of Big Bend Community College. In the quarterfinals she scored a 10-0 tech fall over Jaselle Magana of Southwest Oregon Community College. She followed that up with a third straight shutout via an 11-0 tech fall over Hannah Vipperman of Corban. In the finals, Shines scored her third straight tech fall, this time 12-1, over Kaci Bice of Southwest Oregon CC.
Fabricante posted a 2-1 record en route to her runner-up finish. She began with a 13-2 tech fall over Umpqua Community College's Brisa Salas. In the semis, Fabricante took down Clara Sacglioni of Simon Fraser (B.C.) in a close 8-6 decision. In the finals, she was pinned in 1:34 by Tatum Pine of Grays Harbor College.
Flores Roque was 3-2 at 101 pounds to place in the top-three. She scored all three of her wins by way of pinfall. Her first was in 1:22 over Isabela Schulz of Southwest Oregon CC. Her fastest pin came in 55 seconds over teammate
Mia Schreiner, while her third pin was in 1:24 over Brooke Burrows of Corban. Flores Roque's two losses were by way of an 11-0 tech fall and a 10-2 decision.
Talkington was 3-1 at 155 pounds with two wins coming via pinfall. She pinned Evelyn Lopez-Mata of Umpqua CC in 1:43 and had her second pin come against Gabrielle Tata-Rodriguez in 1:52. Her lone loss was a 4-1 decision against Paige Maher of Simon Fraser. She scored her third win via a 13-2 tech fall against Annabel Garcia of Simon Fraser.
Robinson also posted a 3-1 record at 170 pounds. Of her three wins, two were decisions while the third was a tech fall. She started the day with a 10-0 tech fall over Clarissa Alvarez of Southwest Oregon CC. Her lone loss was a 4-1 decision against Emily Cue of Simon Fraser. She then scored two shutouts to place third. Her first was a 5-0 decision over Valeria Osborn of Southwest Oregon CC, followed by a 6-0 decision over Avery Ackerman of Big Bend CC.
Blankenship was 1-2 at 109 pounds to place third. She dropped a pair of 10-0 tech falls before scoring a 10-0 tech fall in her final match. Baron was 2-3 at 123 pounds with her two wins coming by way of pinfall. She scored her two falls in times of 1:24 and 2:12. Schreiner was 0-6 on the day.
EOU will not be back in action until early December when the team heads to Kentucky for the Patriot Duals hosted by University of the Cumberlands Dec. 3-4. The Mountaineers' opponents are still to be determined.
