LA GRANDE, Ore. - Eastern Oregon Women's Wrestling had a solid outing on Sunday in the team's annual Mountaineer Open with 14 placewinners, including three individual champions.
After a one-year hiatus from the tournament, the Mountaineer women put together a well balanced performance inside Quinn Coliseum in what was the team's first tournament of the 2021-22 season.
Picking up first place finishes were
Morgan Shines (130 pounds),
Kaylee Moore (136 pounds), and
Erin Redford (143 pounds). Although team scores were not kept, the trio racked up nearly 50 pounds at 48.5.
For Shines, she received a bye in the first round and in the quarterfinals she scored an 8-3 decision over Sophie Keefer of Southern Oregon to advance to the semifinals. She then posted a 12-0 tech fall over Marissa Riojas of Grays Harbor College to punch her ticket to the championship. In the finals, Shines edged out Jordyn Robson for the second day in a row with a 3-2 decision to walk away with a 3-0 record.
Moore also needed just three wins to walk away with the first place finish at 136 pounds. She got the day started with a 10-6 decision on Emily Se of SOU. In the semifinals, Moore posted a shutout with a 10-0 tech fall on Tatum Pine of Grays Harbor. Like Shines, Moore's first place match was a close one as she downed Desinee Lopez, 3-2, to earn the win.
Redford's run at a first place finish also was a three-match bout. She started off with a 10-0 tech fall of Andrea Jones of Grays Harbor before posting a 9-0 shutout decision over Grace Miller of Grays Harbor. In the finals, Redford held off Ivy Kraght of Corban with a 3-1 decision to finish 3-0 on the day.
At 101 pounds,
Mia Schreiner earned a runner-up finish with a 2-1 record. She dropped her first round bout, 10-0, but bounced back winning two straight to place in the top-three. Both of her wins were identical in the score as she won both matches via a 14-4 tech fall.
Also earning a second place finish was
Dempsi Talkington at 155 pounds. She won her first three matches with a tech fall (10-0), a fall (3:34), and a tech fall (12-0) before dropping her first match of the. She fell via a 5-1 decision in the fourth round and closed out the day with a fall in 1:24 to place second.
Olivia Robinson was third at 170 pounds, going 3-2. She dropped her opener via a 7-1 decision but bounced back in her second bout with a 7-2 decision in her favor. Robinson moved to 2-1 in round three scoring a 2-1 decision. Her second loss, in round four, was a 10- tech fall before she won via a no contest in round five.
At 109 pounds,
Lisa Megargee finished fourth with a 1-3 record. Her lone win of the day came in the first round on a 10-0 tech fall. She then fell via a decision (5-1) and a pair of tech falls (10-0 & 12-2). Also placing fourth for EOU was
Nayeli Maston at 143 pounds. She finished an even 2-2 on the day with her wins coming by way of pinfall (3:45) and a decision (10-2). She suffered a 11-0 tech fall in her first loss and in the third place match she was pinned in 1:32.
Placing fifth was
Nayeli Flores Roque at 109 pounds. She was 0-4 on the day. Also placing fifth was
Stephanie Blankenship at 116 pounds. She went 2-2 in four bouts. Her first win was a 10-0 tech fall while she earned the fifth place finish with a forfeit win in her final match.
Krystal Fabricante was fifth as well in the 136-pound weight class. She also posted a .500 record going 2-2. Her first win was a 12-2 tech fall, while win No. 2 was a pin in 36 seconds in the fifth place match.
Aleena Wiegand also finished fifth with a 1-4 record. Her lone win was a 7-1 decision.
Placing sixth on the day was
Ariel Ceno at 143 pounds. She went 2-3 with both of her wins coming by way of decision, 8-4 and 9-2, respectively.
Tenley Swope also placed sixth at 155 pounds. She was 0-5 on the day.
The Mountaineers will be back in action next Sunday, Nov. 14 when they head to Forest Grove, Ore. for the annual Mike Clock Open hosted by Pacific University. Mat action is set to begin at 7 a.m. PT.
