Top-ranked Raiders win 5 titles at Battle of the Rockies

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – With its freshly minted No. 1 ranking, the Southern Oregon women's wrestling team captured five individual winners and a team title Friday at the Battle of the Rockies.

Competing with five other teams, the Raiders were represented by champions Valeree Ornelas (109 pounds), Carolina Moreno (123), Sienna Ramirez (155), Bailey Dennis (170) and Karrah Smith (191). Three others reached title matches: Macie Stewart (109), Carolina Johnson (116) and Emily Se (136).

Karly Scott (101), Jordynn Robson (130) and Desinee Lopez (136) each placed third.

Ornelas got to the 109 first-place match with back-to-back technical falls before winning a 5-4 decision against Stewart. Moreno won her title with a 13-2 technical fall over Colorado Mesa's Lillian Broadrick, her fourth consecutive technical fall in the 123 bracket.

At 155, Ramirez pinned her first two opponents and shut out Providence (Mont.)'s Sadie Antoque in a technical fall for the title. Dennis won at 170 with three straight pins, taking down Colorado Mesa's Alex Brulotte in 2:32 in the final. Smith matched Dennis' run with three pins, the last a 4:02 job against Big Bend C.C.'s Michelle Kamyshin.

The Raiders will work on their 2-0 dual record Saturday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time against the tournament host, Providence (Mont.).
