CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Southern Oregon University women’s wrestling team has been selected as the “Under Armour Teams of the Week” for Nov. 29-Dec. 5 the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.
On Friday the Raiders attained the No.1 ranking in the nation for the first time in program history and promptly backed up the nod with wins at the Battle of the Rockies Tournament and in a dual meet against conference foe the University of Providence (Mont.).
At the Battle of the Rockies held in Great Falls, Montana, SOU captured the team title and were represented by champions Valeree Ornelas (109 pounds), Carolina Moreno (123), Sienna Ramirez (155), Bailey Dennis (170) and Karrah Smith (191). Four others reached title matches: Macie Stewart (109), Carolina Johnson (116), Emily Se (136) and Ramona Jimenez (143).
Karly Scott (101), Jordynn Robson (130) and Desinee Lopez (136) each placed third.
In the dual against Providence the Raiders fell behind 14-0 early but stormed back with six pins, including four in a row to end the day in a 31-17 dual win over the No. 14 Argos.
In the national poll the Raiders have 13 individuals who currently rank among the top-20 in their respective classes, including 10 top-eight wrestlers. Defending national champion Sienna Ramirez kept the No. 1 spot at 155 pounds, Emily Se is No. 4 at 130, and Tara Othman is No. 5 at 116.
Southern Oregon will next be in action as they travel to Corban for a dual on Dec.12.
