CORVALLIS, Ore. –
The following 11 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during the period September 13-19, 2021.
Women’s Volleyball - Attacker
Lewis-Clark State College’s Cassidy Nelson was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Attacker of the Week.
Nelson, a junior outside hitter from South Jordan, Utah, led the Warriors with 43 kills in three matches this past week. The senior had back-to-back matches with at least 17 kills, including 17 in the five-set victory over Northwest University, and 19 in the sweep of The Evergreen State College. She had seven kills on seven swings against Walla Walla University to start the week, and tallied six aces across the matches. Her 19 kills were a season-high, as was her four aces on Friday.
Women’s Volleyball - Defender
Lewis-Clark State College’s Kenzie Dean was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week.
Dean, a junior defensive specialist from Athol, Idaho, continued to provide a steady anchor in the back row for LC State. The junior tallied 51 digs and 13 assists across three matches this week and served eight aces. She served 22 times in a row without an error to close out the match against Walla Walla and had five aces in the stretch. The libero had 21 digs in the five-set victory over the Eagles, and 18 in the sweep of the Geoducks to help the Warriors go 3-0 on the weekend.
Women’s Volleyball - Setter
No. 14-ranked Eastern Oregon University’s Alexis McMurtrey was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week.
McMurtrey, a freshman setter from Idaho Falls, Idaho, once again led the way in assists as part of a 6-2 rotation. She had 85 assists for the week and posted 30 in back-to-back matches to average just under 10 assists per set at 9.44. McMurtrey had a pair of service aces for the week and posted a double-double in the first two matches of the week as well.
Women’s Soccer – Defensive Player
No. 15-ranked Eastern Oregon University’s Madeline Barker was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Barker, a freshman goalkeeper from Kalama, Wash., was a wall in between the posts, grabbing a pair of shutouts on the week and share of the shutout against Multnomah University. Against then-ranked No. 17 Westmont, Barker tallied six saves in 90 minutes to help the Mounties secure a 1-0 victory. She finished the week with nine saves and three wins.
Women’s Soccer – Offensive Player
No. 15-ranked Eastern Oregon University’s Morgan Farrington was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Farrington, a senior forward from Meridian, Idaho, was a force on offense for EOU in its 3-0 week as she scored a goal in every contest. She had the game-winning goal in all three contests, totaling four goals on the week.
Men’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Warner Pacific University’s Alexis Calderilla-Hurtado was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Calderilla-Hurtado, a senior goalkeeper from Wenatchee, Wash., had back-to-back complete game shutouts to keep the Knights undefeated on the CCC opening weekend. The stout WPU defensive front only allowed five total shots on goal against Calderilla-Hurtado, who improved to 4-0 on the season. He also assisted on the game-winning goal Saturday morning against College of Idaho.
Men’s Soccer – Offensive Player
Carroll College’s Rory Bloy was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Bloy, a junior forward from Johannesburg, South Africa, helped Carroll open the conference season 1-1. He scored in both games, including the game-winner in the CCC opener and the tying goal against No. 23-ranked Corban University. Bloy had a hat trick in the Saints’ 6-1 victory, also assisting on another goal. He finished the game with five shots on goal.
Women’s Cross Country – Runner
Multnomah University’s Shiloh Mounce was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Mounce, a junior from Oregon City, Ore., was the top finisher at the Bushnell University Invite out of 23 total runners. She finished the 5K with a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds, a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher.
Men’s Cross Country – Runner
College of Idaho’s Logan Hunt was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second week in a row.
Hunt, a sophomore from Athol, Idaho, dominated the field at the EOU Invitational, recording a 14-second win out of 65 total runners. He crossed the 7K finish line in a time of 22:02 to grab his second win of the season.
Men’s Golf – Golfer
UBC’s Ethan de Graaf was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
De Graaf, a second-year golfer from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, won the first CCC event of the season in playoff fashion. He posted an even par 216 (72-70-74) over three rounds to force a three-way tie. De Graaf then clinched the victory on the third playoff hole, with birdies on all three holes.
Women’s Golf – Golfer
UBC’s Emily Li was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Li, a first-year golfer from Coquitlam, B.C., Canada, posted a two-round score of eight-over 152 (73-79) to clinch her first individual CCC tournament title. It also helped the Thunderbirds win their first event back in the CCC after having to opt out last year due to border closures.
