VanDyke Stands Out in Division I Field at The Podium

SPOKANE, Wash. – Clayton VanDyke was the lone Warrior to compete in the second day of the Cougar Classic at The Podium in downtown Spokane, which mainly consisted of a strong field of NCAA Division I opponents.

After a busy first day of the Cougar Classic, Vandyke returned to finish second in the 800m dash with a time of 1:53.01. The race consisted of all Division I athletes, aside from the LC State senior. On Friday, VanDyke finished second in the mile with a school-record time of 4:07.79, the NAIA’s current fastest mile this year, and was a member of the national-qualifying distance medley relay to that raced later that night.

“I think he was still just a little bit tired from last night’s two one-mile repeats with the open mile and then the DMR,” Head Coach Mike Collins said. “Raced pretty smart late in a race where you can’t give up too much time early on and because there’s not enough time to get it back. Excited to see him race next week, probably in the 1K and the 600m, and qualify in a couple more events.”

The Warriors are back in action and close to home when they compete on Saturday, Jan. 22 in Moscow at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open.
