LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a semifinal setback, the No. 3-ranked Southern Oregon women's wrestling team rebounded with a 27-17 win over No. 5 Grand View (Iowa) to capture third place Friday in the NAIA division of the U.S. Marine Corps/NWCA National Dual Meet Championships.
The Raiders defeated three NAIA Top 20 teams in two days at the tournament. Their 28-15 loss to No. 2 Life (Ga.) in the semifinal round was their first of the season. Their dual record went to 7-1.
They got back in the win column by claiming the first four matches against GVU. Emma Baertelin opened with a technical-fall shutout over Emma Cochran at 101, Valeree Ornelas followed with a second-round pin of Chloe Krebsbach at 109, and Tara Othman (116) and Carolina Johnson (123) added back-to-back wins by decision.
The Raiders went on to bank three more technical falls: Julissa Taitano (136) over Leilani Rodriguez, Sienna Ramirez (155) over Madison Diaz, and Karrah Smith (191) over Grace Brown.
Baertlein's tech – which capped a perfect tournament – marked a major upset over Cochran, the No. 5-ranked 101-pounder in the NAIA. Johnson's victim at 123, Turner, was ranked No. 6.
Against Life, Emily Se won by fall at 143 and Ramirez by decision at 155. Baertlein took a forfeit at 101.
Life went on to win the tournament final against top-ranked Campbellsville, 25-19.
SOU had never finished higher than eighth place at the tournament prior to this appearance.
The Raiders will return to the mats Jan. 15, competing at the Oregon Classic in Redmond and in duals against Simpson (Calif.) and Life Pacific (Calif.) in Redding, Calif.
