WVT Laboratory Players of the Week Announced

CORVALLIS, Ore. The following 11 CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the WVT Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during competition from Feb. 14-20, 2022.
 
Women’s Basketball – Player
Northwest University’s Sam VanLoo was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this year.
 
VanLoo, a senior post from Lynden, Wash., averaged a double-double over the weekend to close out the regular conference schedule. She led the Eagles to a one-point win over Bushnell University, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The next day VanLoo posted 14 points and 10 boards. She finished the week averaging 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
 
Men’s Basketball – Player
Eastern Oregon University’s Phillip Malatare was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this year.
 
Malatare, a junior guard from Arelee, Mont., posted a pair of double-doubles to lift EOU to victory in two close games over the weekend. He shot 52.8-percent and averaged 25.0 points per game. Malatare grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds against Multnomah University and finished the week averaging 10.5 boards per game. He shot 4-5 from three-point for the weekend and was 8-9 at the free throw line.
 
Men’s Wrestling – Wrestler
No. 8-ranked Montana State University-Northern’s Isaac Bartel was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Wrestler of the Week.
 
Bartel, a senior from Mason City, Iowa, dominated the 197-pound bracket at the CCC Men’s Wrestling Championship, presented by U.S. Bank. The top-ranked 197-pound grappler posted four-straight pins to win his third individual conference championship and earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Championship.
 
Women’s Indoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
College of Idaho’s Abbey Shirts was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.
 
Shirts, a junior from Weiser, Idaho, set a new school record in the 1,000-meter event at the Polar Vortex Classic. Shirts took first in a time of two minutes, 54.60 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in the NAIA this season.
 
Women’s Indoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
College of Idaho’s Catylynn Duff was named the WVT Laboratory Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this year.
 
Duff, a senior from Culver, Ore., destroyed C of I’s weight throw record by two feet, increasing her NAIA lead in the event with her mark of 61 feet, 4 inches. She also hit the NAIA "B" standard in the shot put, allowing her to compete in two events at Indoor Nationals.
 
Men’s Indoor Track & Field – Track Athlete
Multnomah University’s Roderick Soto Ramirez was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
 
Soto Ramirez, a freshman from Hutto, Texas, qualified for nationals win the 400m over the weekend at the Polar Vortex Classic. He took first with a time of 49.14 seconds.
 
Men’s Indoor Track & Field – Field Athlete
College of Idaho’s Caleb Brown was named the WVT Laboratory Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
 
Brown, a senior from Colfax, Wash., punched his ticket to the NAIA Championships with a personal-best score of 4,667 points in the heptathlon. It also earned him first place at the Polar Vortex Classic.
 
Softball – Pitcher
No. 2-ranked College of Idaho’s Katelyn Wilfert was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Pitcher of the Week.
 
Wilfert, a right-handed pitcher from Meridian, Idaho, tossed a two-hit shutout in a win at William Jessup, before adding 4.2 innings of shutout relief against the University of Antelope Valley. She combined for 12 strikeouts and only one walk to help the Coyotes go 6-0 on the week.
 
Softball – Player
No. 2-ranked College of Idaho’s Haley Loffer was named the WVT Laboratory Softball Player of the Week.
 
Loffer, a senior infielder from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, hit .611 in the six-game series in California. She had three 3-hit games, scored 12 runs, grabbed four walks, and had four stolen bases. Loffer finished the week with six RBIs and a .778 slugging percentage.
 
Baseball – Pitcher
No. 4-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Trent Sellers was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year.
 
Sellers, a junior right-handed pitcher/outfielder from Kennewick, Wash., earned his third win of the season after throwing six innings of one-hit baseball on Friday against NCAA Division II Central Washington. He struck out four batters and did not allow a single run.
 
Baseball – Player
No. 4-ranked Lewis-Clark State College’s Riley Way was named the WVT Laboratory Baseball Player of the Week.
 
Way, a senior infielder from Lewiston, Idaho, helped the Warriors to a weekend sweep of NCAA Division II Central Washington. The shortstop tallied nine hits in 19 at-bats (.474) with two doubles and three RBIs. He stole two bags in two attempts and scored three runs on the week. Each of the four games was a multi-hit game for the senior, including three in the series opener.
