LC State’s Davila and Schmidt Both Tie for Fourth at First Spring Event

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Led by strong individual performances from Carlos Davila and Alexandra Schmidt, the Lewis-Clark State College Men’s and Women’s Golf teams shot their best scores during the final round of the Ottawa University (Ariz.) Sterling Grove Shootout on Tuesday.

The Warrior men, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA, wound up tied for second place with No. 24-ranked Embry Riddle (Ariz.) in the 54-hole tournament, while the LC women placed third.

Both Davila and Schmidt tied for fourth in their respective individual standings. Davila, who had the most pars of any golfer in the tournament with 37, fired a 1-over-par 73 over the final 18 holes for a 227 total. Schmidt continued her solid play for the Warrior women with a final round of 77 for 239 total, only 10 shots behind the overall medalist.

Host Ottawa University (Ariz.), ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, won the men’s tournament at 895, while LC State and Embry Riddle were at 922. Both teams struggled during the second round of Monday’s play, which was played in high winds and cool temperatures.

Sondre Andresen, a freshman making his Warrior debut, fired a 74 on Tuesday and wound up tied for 10th overall with Jorgen Lie Viken, who had a 75 Tuesday.

“It was a battle for the guys,” LC coach Brady Campbell said. “It was better but still not where we want to be. We know what we need to do in order to be ready for Vegas in three weeks. Sondre had a solid start to his collegiate career and Carlos was pretty steady in the wind leading us.”

The Embry-Riddle women, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, captured the title with a 934 score, while No. 25-ranked Ottawa was second at 954. LC State was third at 994, but shot its best round of the tourney with a 319 on Tuesday.

“It was great to see the girls come back today and forget yesterday,” Campbell said. “Alex continued to do what she has done all year with another top 5. Deana and Kyla gave us some solid rounds”.

Deana Caruso fired a final round of 78 and tied for 15th for LC State at 248, while Kyla Currie, the only golfer in the women’s field with two eagles, was 18th at 251.

This was the first tournament of the spring season for LC State. The two Warrior teams will be back in action on March 15-16 in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate event, which will be held in Henderson, Nev.

“This week was a big learning experience for both teams and we are glad we went through this in February and not April to May,” Campbell said.
