Steven's takes 4th in pentathlon to become NAIA Indoor All-American

COMPLETE MEET RESULTS

BROOKINGS, S.D. – A big finish boosted Southern Oregon freshman Abi Stevens to fourth place and All-America status in the pentathlon, and the Raiders' 4x400-meter women's relay team placed ninth in the prelims during the opening day of the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

Stevens, a product of West Allis, Wisc., and transfer from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, became SOU's first-ever pentathlon All-American by scoring 3,413 points. She accumulated 787 of those in the last of five disciplines, the 800-meter run, with a time of 2 minutes 22.75 seconds that was the best in the 16-person field and moved her up seven spots in the standings.

Stevens was in 13th place through three disciplines before positioning herself with a mark of 17 feet 8 ¾ inches in the long jump. Her second-highest scoring event was in the 60-meter hurdles, where she scored 765 points with a time of 9.72 seconds.

The relay team – consisting of Camille Lawrence, Erin Gibson, Lindsey Bonney and Baylee Touey – recorded a time of 3:53.99 to finish one spot back of advancing to Saturday's final. Of the three preliminary heats, the Raiders' featured the three fastest times. Life (Ga.) was the top qualifier in 3:46.37.

SOU's time in the 17-team field was more than four seconds faster than its national-qualifying mark.

The Raiders wrap up competition at the meet on Saturday, when Adam O'Brien will be the No. 10 seed in the pole vault at 11:15 a.m. Pacific Time and Stevens will be the No. 4 seed in the high jump at 11:30 a.m.
