EOU's Davis Leads Heptathlon After Day One of Indoor Nationals

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Eastern Oregon University Track & Field wrapped up day one action of the 2022 NAIA Indoor National Championships on Friday Thursday afternoon. Highlighting the day for the Mountaineers was the performance of multi-event athlete TJ Davis.

Davis was superb in the heptathlon on day one as he sits in first place through four events. He racked up wins in the two of the four events and totaled 3,000 points. He currently has a 48-point edge over second place.

Davis started his day in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.21. He placed fourth overall and it was his first of four top-four finishes on day one. He then won the next two events before placing fourth for second time in his final one

In event No. 2, the long jump, he led the whole way through. His first leap was 22-2 ½ and it gave him the top spot right away. No one jumped further than that except for Davis. He scratched on his second attempt, but came back and leaped 22-3 ½ on his final jump to secure his first win.

The shot put was won by Davis and it came on his final throw of the event. He grabbed the lead on throw No.1, heaving the rock 40-9 ¾. The second round of attempts moved him down to second, but he was not phased. In the final round of throws, Davis hit 44-2 ½ and his mark was just under two feet ahead of second place.

In the final event of the day, high jump, Davis secured another top-four place with a tie for fourth place. He cleared 6-2 ¾ on his third attempt to secure a spot in the top-four. Leading up to his final height, Davis cleared his first four marks all on the first attempt. 

Also competing in the heptathlon is Sam Roddewig and Judson Mansfield. Roddewig is currently eighth going into day two with 2,565 points while Mansfield is 10th with 2,511 points.

In the 60, Roddewig ran a 7.40 to place 11th. He bounced back with a seventh place finish in the long jump, leaping 21-3 ½. He followed up with another seventh place finish in the shot put. He chucked the rock 37-6 ¾ on his last throw to place in the top-eight once more. In high jump, Roddewig tied for 12th, clearing the bar at a height of 5-7 ½.

Mansfield had a slow start, running just a 7.54 in the 60 to start the day, but bounced back as the day progressed. In the long jump, he hit a mark of 20-3 ½ to grab an 11th place finish. The shot put Mansfield finished right behind Roddewig at eighth with a throw of 36-9. He secured another top-10 finish in the high jump, finishing tied for ninth with a height clearance of 5-11.

Rounding day one action for the Mountaineers was the men's distance medley relay squad. The quartet of Cristian Mendoza, Jonathan Wind, Hunter Nichols, and Travis Running ran a combined time of 10:10.60. They finished fourth in their heat and were just outside the top eight that qualified for finals with a 10th place overall finish.

Day two action of the NAIA Indoor National Championships will begin at 8 a.m. PT with the heptathlon. Running and field events begin at 10 a.m. Competing tomorrow will be Davis, Roddewig and Mansfield in the final day of the heptathlon.

Also in action will be Michelle Herbes and Hunter Nichols in the 800-meter run. Cody Milmine will also hit the track, competing in the 60-meter dash. On the field, Tyler Jones will compete in the high jump, while Kenna Woodward will compete in the weight throw.
