CCC Track & Field Multi-Event Championships Day 1 Recap

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Day one of the 2022 CCC Multi-Event Championships, presented by U.S. Bank wrapped up late Thursday afternoon at Banner Bank Track. Through the first day of action, Valerie Schmidt of Corban University and TJ Davis of Eastern Oregon University are leaders in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively.

Schmidt racked up 3, 074 points through the first four events. She finished in the top three in all four events, with her best finish coming in the shot put which she won. She hit a mark of 38-10 ½ on her third and final throw to secure the win. She was second in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.57 seconds.

In the only other track event of the heptathlon, the 200-meter dash, Schmidt finished third, running a 26.23. In the high jump, she cleared 5-3 ¼ and finished in a three-way tie for third. Going into day two, Schmidt holds a slim 99 point lead over Hassy Fashina-Bombata of University of British Columbia who has 2,975 points. In third is Roby Young of College of Idaho with 2,826 points.

In the decathlon, Davis was superb as he won all five events on Thursday to grab the day one sweep. He totaled 3,802 points through the five wins and currently leads second by 365 points. On the track, Davis got the day started clocking a 11.18 in the 100-meter dash. He then transitioned over to the long jump where he posted a mark of 22-4 ¼ on his final attempt for the win.

In the shot put, Davis edged second place by 4 ¼ inches to move to 3-0 on the day. He chucked the rock 38-11 ¾ on his first throw, which was enough to hold off the field. In the final field event, high jump, Davis cleared the bar at a height of 6-5 and edged out second by just under three inches. He ended with a dominant performance in the 400-meter dash. He ran a 49.33 and was 2.73 seconds ahead of second.

In second place after the first day in the decathlon is Thomas Dodgen of Oregon Tech. He racked up 3,437 points in the first five events. EOU’s Judson Mansfield is third with 3,220 points. 

A notable performance from day one of the CCC Multi-Event Championships came from UBC’s Fashina-Bombata. She ran a new CCC record time in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.23 seconds. Her mark beats out the previous record of 14.32 seconds set by Kiersten Lancaster of College of Idaho in 2021.

Day two of the CCC Multi-Event Championships gets under Friday morning, April 22, at 10 a.m. for the decathlon and 10:15 a.m. for the heptathlon. Decathlon events on deck are the 100-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1,500-meter run. In the heptathlon, three events remain in the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run.
