ASHLAND – Four meet records went down in 10 events on Day 1 of the Cascade Conference Men’s Track and Field Championships presented by U.S. Bank as College of Idaho took the team lead on Friday at Raider Stadium.
The Yotes – who were the co-champs last year with Eastern Oregon – scored 98 points to take a nine-point edge over British Columbia, the No. 1 team in the NAIA computer rankings. EOU put itself in position to threaten for the title just 12 points back in third place.
Saturday’s action begins at 11 a.m. Below is a chronological recap of Friday’s events:
HAMMER: The most explosive hammer-thrower the CCC has ever produced claimed his rightful spot in the record books, as UBC’s Rowan Hamilton won his second title with a throw of 248-11 – breaking the previous meet record by more than 36 feet. C of I’s Bryan Terry took second place at 176-3, and SOU claimed the Nos. 3-5 spots with Wayne Garcia (172-10), Matthew O’Henley (172-1) and Conner Johnson (159-10).
STEEPLECHASE: In a UBC-dominated race, Dylan Uhrich, owner of the top time in the NAIA, scored another win for the Thunderbirds in 9:16.99. He cleared runner-up Braden Heath (9:24.18) of C of I by over seven seconds before his teammates, Aiden Miller (9:29.55) and Owen Harris (9:29.87) came in third and fourth.
LONG JUMP: EOU’s Allex Kosel became a back-to-back conference champion with a mark of 23-6, clearing runner-up Jason Soriano (22-11 ¼) of UBC by more than half a foot. C of I had three scorers, including the next two placers: All-CCC honoree Amari Evans (22-10) and Kade Setoki (22-8 ½).
POLE VAULT: The CCC’s three national qualifiers held true to their pre-meet seeds as EOU’s Darrian Walker (16-4 ¾) knocked off defending champion Adam O’Brien (16-0 ¾) of SOU. O’Brien’s runner-up showing marked his third straight season among the top-three, and LCSC’s Nik Bertling (15-9) claimed third.
SHOT PUT: Bryan Terry became the third C of I thrower to win the shot put in three seasons, pulling off an upset and hitting the NAIA ‘B’ standard at 51-9 ¾. He was among four C of I scorers, a group that included third-place Stephen Campbell (51-3 ¾). UBC’s Theo Benedet (51-5 ¾) took second.
