CORVALLIS, Ore. – The following eleven CCC student-athletes have been recognized as the Rize Laboratory Players of the Week for their performances during competition from Oct. 23 – 29, 2023.
Men’s Golf – Golfer
Lewis-Clark State College’s Juan Pablo Quisoboni was named the Rize Laboratory Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Quisoboni (66-74 – 140), a senior from Bogota, Colombia, earned his first collegiate victory, helping LC State to a team win at the Whitman Confluence Classic last week. He shot a 6-under, 66 in the first round to take a commanding lead and finished his tournament with a 74 for a 4-under, 140. Quisoboni won the individual title by two strokes over 57 total golfers, leading the Warriors to a team title by nine strokes.
Women’s Golf – Golfer
Lewis-Clark State College’s Kyla Currie was named the Rize Laboratory Women’s Golfer of the Week for the second time this season.
Currie (74-76 – 150), a senior from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, continued her breakout season with a tie for third at the Whitman Confluence Classic last week. Against 44 other golfers, she was the lone finisher in the top five, outside of players from the defending NCAA Division III champions of George Fox University. This was her third straight top-three finish, leading the Warriors to a third-place team finish.
Men’s Cross Country – Runner
No. 6 Eastern Oregon University’s Justin Ash was named the Rize Laboratory Men’s Cross Country Runner of the week.
Ash, a junior from Baker City, Ore., took seventh overall at the Sasquatch Open on Wednesday among 52 total runners. He recorded a time of 25:00.2 in the 8K, leading the Mounties to a second-place team finish.
Women’s Cross Country – Runner
(RV) Eastern Oregon University’s Lauryn Mitchell was named the Rize Laboratory Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Mitchell, a junior from Midvale, Idaho., finished 16th at the Sasquatch Open on Wednesday among 39 total runners. She covered the 5K course in 19:40.8, leading the Mounties to a fourth place team finish.
Men’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Bushnell University’s Jay Jay Van Der Velde was named the Rize Laboratory Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Van Der Velde, a sophomore defender from Utrecht, Netherlands, led the Beacons to their first two conference wins of the season this weekend. In the first ever victory over Rocky Mountain College (4-3), he scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute. In the second defeat over Walla Walla University (2-0), he assisted in both the goals, leading Bushnell’s defensive efforts while only allowing two shots-on-goal.
Men’s Soccer – Offensive Player
Oregon Tech’s Brock Rideout was named the Rize Laboratory Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Rideout, a senior defender from Las Vegas, Nev., showed out for his senior day yesterday, leading the Owls to record their largest margin of victory in program history against Northwest University (7-0). He scored the first three goals of the game in the first 25 minutes. He added an assist and ended the day with a .600 shot-on-goal percentage.
Women’s Soccer – Defensive Player
Eastern Oregon University's Chloe Flynn was named the Rize Laboratory Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Flynn, a junior defender from Boise, Idaho, led the Mounties to two more victories last weekend. In the first 4-0 shutout over Warner Pacific University, she scored twice. The next day, in the 3-0 shutout over Multnomah University, she added one more goal. She ended the weekend with a .600 shot-on-goal percentage, only allowing opponents five total shots-on-goal.
Women’s Soccer – Offensive Player
No. 15 College of Idaho’s Eden Makaafi was named the Rize Laboratory Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Makaafi, a sophomore forward from Boise, Idaho, led the Yotes to its final two shutouts of the regular season last weekend. She scored the final three goals in the 4-0 victory against Multnomah University. The next day, C of I also defeated Warner Pacific University by a final score of 7-0. Makaafi currently leads the CCC in points and goals with a total of 31 and 13, respectively.
Volleyball – Attacker
No. 3 Eastern Oregon University’s Sade Williams was named the Rize Laboratory Volleyball Attacker of the Week.
Williams, a senior outside hitter from Idaho Falls, Idaho, led the Mounties to another two win weekend. She recorded 27 kills and a .205 hitting percentage while also adding 29 digs and 8 blocks. For the second time this season, Eastern Oregon defeated Bushnell University and No. 6 Corban University, both victories were completed in four sets. Williams is in the top 10 in the CCC for kills, averaging 2.69 a set.
Volleyball – Defender
Oregon Tech’s Kaley Whalen was named the Rize Laboratory Volleyball Defender of the Week for the second time this season.
Whalen, a sophomore defensive specialist from Reno, Nev., had a huge weekend, helping OIT take two victories from the Seattle schools. She completed 51 digs (6.38 d/s) in the victories over Northwest University (3-2) and The Evergreen State College (3-0). Whalen currently ranks fourth in the CCC for digs, averaging 4.69 per set.
Volleyball – Setter
No. 3 Eastern Oregon University's Alexis McMurtrey was named the Rize Laboratory Volleyball Setter of the Week for the fifth time this season.
McMurtrey, a junior setter from Idaho Falls, Idaho, led the Mounties with 48 assists last week, averaging 6.00 per set. She also contributed 29 digs, two kills, and a service ace. Eastern Oregon defeated Bushnell University and No. 6 Corban University, both victories were completed in four sets. In the CCC, McMurtrey currently ranks third in service aces (0.37 avg/s) and sixth in assists (5.57 avg/s).
