Two Oaks Earn Individual Champion

Kalila Shrive (170) - 1st Place

The freshman from Tracy, California showed outstanding wrestling today as she went 4-0 in her first collegiate tournament to win the 171-title. The day began with a matchup against Faith Macharia (Missouri Baptist University) where Kalila won by pin in the second round. Back-to-back tech falls against Destiny Ware (Umpqua CC, 10-0) and Kaley Rice (Texas Wesleyan, 12-0) would send Shrive to the Championship match. There she faced off with #4 Lily El-Masri (Vanguard). The score was tied 4-4 going into the second round when Shrive got a 4-point takedown with 8 seconds left in the match. She would take the upset win by decision, 9-6. This is Kalila's first appearance as an Oak and has already won her first tournament!

#1 Tavia Heidelberg-Tillotson (191) - 1st place

Senior 3x All-American was ready for her time to shine on the mat at the Menlo Open! Tavia went 3-0 on the day to earn the 191-Champion. A first round bye would send Heidelberg against Ramona Jimenez (Southern Oregon) to only wrestle 50 seconds before earning a pin. In the semifinals, Tavia would then pin #8 Madeline Welch (Life University) also within the first 50 seconds of the match to punch her ticket to the first place match. Her final opponent was Shenita Lawson (Southern Oregon) who is ranked #3 in the nation at 170. Tavia was able to get 5 points off of Lawson before taking her third pin of the day. No better way to start off your final season than to take the championship of the first tournament!

10 Oaks Place in Top 6

On top of the two first place finishers are 8 other Oaks placing in their respective weight classes. Senior All-American #4 Tianna Fernandez went 2-1 on the day to take 2nd place. Fernanez first earned a tech fall (10-0) against Vivana Davalos (Vanguard) to make it to the semifinals. There, Tianna pinned #6 Devyn Gomez (Life University) to advance into the final match.

Two Menlo wrestlers found themselves at the top 6 of the 116 weight class. Alejandra Corral went 3-1 on the day to place 3rd. Corral totaled 3 tech falls all by the score of 10-0. In the 3rd place match, she faced off with teammate Hayden Fry who ended up taking 4th place. Hayden ended her first tournament appearance 4-2 with a pin against Jade Cabrera (Vanguard), two decisions, and a tech fall. It was a great first showing for the freshman from Encinitas, California!

At the 155 weight class, #4 Shannon Workinger would finish 6-1 to place 3rd. 4 of those wins would be by pin with her quickest one happening in 39 seconds over Christa Sindel (Southwestern Oregon CC). In the 3rd place match Workinger was up against #15 Leilani Hernandez where a pin in the 2nd minute would earn the 3rd place title.
