EOU Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in Season Opener

DILLON, Mont. - Eastern Oregon Men's Basketball opened their season against Montana Western Friday evening, falling to a final score of 70-67. The Mounties battled to a close finish, but were ultimately plagued by foul trouble as three vital starters fouled out of the game.

Eastern Oregon initially led 34-32 at halftime, but Montana Western rallied in the second half to secure a 38-33 advantage in the final period, ultimately winning the game. Despite shooting 33.9% from the field, the Mounties kept the game close with an impressive 90.5% success rate from the free-throw line. Friday's contest featured two ties and five lead changes, underscoring the back and forth game.

Malachi Afework was the top scorer for Eastern Oregon, notching 20 points, while Garrett Hawkes added 10 points and led the team with 3 assists. Transfer point guard Jonny Hillman contributed 15 points and was a force on both ends of the court with 4 steals and 1 block. 

On the Montana Western side, Jalyn Stepney and Abi Adedo led the way with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Quincy Taylor also made significant contributions with 4 assists and 4 points. Montana Western's success at the free-throw line, where they shot 75%, played a crucial role in securing the victory.

The Mountaineers will stay in Dillon for tomorrow's contest with No. 6 ranked Montana Tech, tipping off at 1 a.m. MST.
