Corban Track and Field Starts Strong at Willamette Opener

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's and women's track & field teams opened up their 2023 slate with a strong start on Saturday, turning in an impressive showing at the Willamette Opener. The Warrior men finished third in the team scores behind Mt. Hood Community College and the University of Oregon's running club, while the Navy and Gold women finished in second behind Willamette University.

RESULTS

"We had a very good opening meet despite all the wind, cold, and rain," said head coach Todd Bos. "A few highlights would be Evan Olson's number four all-time javelin throw of 179'5". It is entirely feasible for Evan to hit the A-standard at some point during the season. We have also been anxiously awaiting to see DJ Armstead compete this season and his time of 11.25 would have landed him at the number seven all-time spot, except the time was wind aided. Another notable performance was Hero Peters as she won the 200m in under 27 seconds. Finally, Jaelene Diaz-Chavez did an outstanding job in the throws, winning the hammer, placing second in the discus and 4th in the shot."

Starting on the men's side, Will Maupin (5'4.25") took second in the high jump, while Will Cordero (105'0") placed second in the discus just four tenths of a meter behind the first-place toss. The veteran also took third in the shot put, earning valuable points for the Navy and Gold.

Additionally, Olson took first in the javelin in his debut as a Warrior, uncorking a 179' 5" toss good enough to break into the top four in Corban's record books. Jacob Moore (149'4") placed fourth in the event.

Two warriors raced in the men's 100m with freshman Armstead leading the way with a fourth-place finish (11.25). Freshman Josiah del Prado placed 14th with a time of 12.33 in his inaugural meet with the Navy and Gold.

The Warriors placed second, third, and fourth in the men's 400m with strong performances from Caleb Schmoll (52.36), Shane Davis (53.48) and Noah Miller (54.01).

On the women's side, Freshman Leah Twede was impressive with her fifth-place finish in the javelin tossing 116'11". Keelyn O'Reilly was right behind her finishing sixth, hurling the javelin 114'5".

Freshman, Madelynn Straus placed fourth in the high jump clearing a height of 4'2.25".

In the women's shot put, junior Madilyn Kleiber placed second hitting a 33'6" mark. Junior, Jaelene Diaz-Chaves got fourth with her toss of 32'0" and Keelyn O'Reilly was two places behind her earning a sixth-place finish throwing 31'7.50".

Of note, Diaz-Chavez won the hammer and placed second in the discus with a 102'7" toss.

In the women's 100m, freshman Jacey Felzien's sprint of 14.51 was good for a 6th place finish.

Peters led the way in the women's 200m topping her competitors with a time of 26.75. Jenna Miller placed second, clocking a time of 28.04. Fifth and seventh-place finishes from Juliana Brown (28.59) and Madelynn Straus (30.27) rounded out the four warrior runners in the race.

"We will continue to try and improve next week as we head down to Eugene for the Lane CC Open," Bos added, speaking of his squad's upcoming contests. "We are grateful the outdoor season has begun and will do our best to compete for His glory and not our own!"

Corban will next be in action on March 11, traveling down to Eugene, Ore. for the Lane Community College Open.
