SOU leaves Lewis & Clark Invite with 3 new NAIA qualifying marks

COMPLETE MEET RESULTS

PORTLAND
– Another big weekend in the men's field events made Southern Oregon's stay at the Lewis & Clark Larry Byerly Invite a successful one with three new NAIA Championship qualifying marks.

Luke King became an automatic qualifier in the shot put, Andrew Mitchell improved his 'A' standing in the javelin with the third-best throw in school history, and Cody Le Bel hit the 'B' standard on the nose in the pole vault to headline the Raiders' efforts.

King placed second of 37 in the shot put with a mark of 52 feet 10 ¾ inches, the eight-best in the NAIA this season and the best among Cascade Conference athletes. Third-place Tre Holmes narrowly missed the 'B' at 49-9 ¾.

Mitchell's throw of 201-2 gave him second place in the javelin and put him at No. 8 on the national performance list. He also topped a 40-person field in the discus with a mark of 156-5, a couple feet short of the season-best 'B' he established in March.

Le Bel is now a provisional national qualifier in the pole vault with the No. 13 mark on the NAIA performance list after clearing 15-5 to win the 17-person event. SOU got two more strong showings in the hammer from third-place Wayne Garcia (168-3) and fourth-place Matthew O'Henley (163-7).

The Raider women were also busy and got a win from their 4x400-meter relay team of Abi Stevens, Sarah Mauk, Aayzia Dumas and India Ortiz. Their time of 3:59.24 stands as the best in the CCC this season.

Dumas earlier clocked a season-best 400 time of 59.99 to place third of 29. Sarah Mauk added a season-best in the 800 of 2:19.78 to place 10th of 51, and Sydnee Kizziar recorded a 1,500 PR of 4:46.27 to place 15th of 66.

In the field, Sienna Bauer was second of 19 in the triple jump (35-8 ¾) and Abi Stevens was third of 28 in the long jump (16-11 ½). Thrower Andrea Osbon met three CCC standards and took third of 34 in the shot put (38-5).

Elsewhere for the men, Cade O'Connor placed fourth of 32 in the 400 with a season-best time of 49.80, the fifth-best in the CCC this season. He was also third in the 400 hurdles (57.63). Isaac Fernandez led the Raiders in the 800 (1:58.41) in 12th of 57, and in the 1,500 he was 11th (3:57.98) and Frankie Maciel 14th (3:58.23) in a 96-person field.

SOU will appear in Ashland next week for the first and only time this season. The Raiders host the Cascade Conference Multi-Event Championships on Thursday and Friday and the Raider Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
