UBC Repeats as Women’s CCC Track and Field Champions

LA GRANDE, Ore. – At the conclusion of the 2023 Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank it was the conference favorites, the University of British Columbia, who stood alone at the top of the standings with 189 points. Thunderbirds’ Head Coach Laurier Primeau was named CCC Women’s Coach of the Year after leading the women to their second-straight CCC Championship.


College of Idaho’s Abbey Shirts was named the CCC Track Athlete of the Meet after a dominant performance winning the 800, taking second in the 1500, and running anchor for the Yotes’ 4x400-meter relay.
 
EOU’s own Maggie Ledbetter won Field Athlete of the Meet for her performance in home territory. The graduate student won the women’s shot put and discus along with a second-place finish in the hammer throw.


Winning the Team Sportsmanship Award on the women’s side was the College of Idaho.
 
A chronological recap of Saturday’s events is below:
 
DISCUS: Maggie Ledbetter earned her third career CCC Championship gold medal in the discus with her second first place finish of the meet. Her “A” Standard mark of 44.79 meters is a season high by over two meters. Corban’s Gabrielle Tata-Rodrigues finished second with a mark of 41.49 meters. Ledbetter’s teammate and hammer throw champion, Kenna Woodward, finished third with a throw of 39.09 meters.
 
TRIPLE JUMP: UBC’s Allison Macdonald broke the conerence and facility record with a jump of 12.13 meters (“A” Standard) which marks a season high and top-five mark in the NAIA. Coming in second place was LCSC’s Sydnie Zywina with a jump of 12.01 meters (“A” Standard). The College of Idaho’s Sophi Clay finished third with a jump of 11.21 meters.
 
POLE VAULT: UBC picked up another field event victory in the pole vault when Sonya Urbanowics cleared 3.65 meters, an NAIA “A” Standard mark. College of Idaho’s Sage Wood finished in second clearing 3.35 meters and LCSC’s Cynthia Smith earned the final All-CCC spot clearing 3.25 meters.


100 METERS: The Thunderbirds continued an excellent day moving over to the track as the pair of Hanna Sobkowich and Emma Rastad finished first and second respectively. Sobkowich’s time of 11.69 seconds was an “A” Standard and facility record. Rastad finished with a “B” Standard time of 11.93 seconds as the runner up. College of Idaho’s Sage Wood rounded out the top three with a time of 12.08 seconds.

800 METERS: A loaded field put up six qualifying times in the 800 and all three podium placers finished with “A” Standard times. College of Idaho’s Abbey Shirts edged out UBC’s Holly MacGillivray for the win finishing in 2:11.30. MacGillivray was hot on Shirts’s heels with a time of 2:11.49. EOU’s Michelle Herbes clinched the final All-CCC award with a third place finish and time of 2:12.74 seconds.

400 METER HURDLES: The 400-meter hurdles was a neck-and-neck race between the top two runners. LCSC’s Ashley Britt edged out EOU’s Morgan Bayes at the finish line with an “A” Standard time of 1:02.55. Bayes finished a hair behind with a time of 1:02.65 which was also an “A” Standard time. LC State claimed the third spot as well with Sara Hathaway finishing at 1:04.79.

200 METERS: UBC’s Hanna Sobkowich kept her momentum going in the 200 picking up yet another CCC Title with a time of 23.99 seconds (“A” Standard). The sophomore’s time ranks inside the top 10 in the nation. EOU’s Yahaira Chavarria-Mondragon earned a spot on the podium with a second-place finish and time of 24.78 seconds. LCSC’s Anika Grogan picked up six team points and a All-CCC honor in third with a time of 24.86 seconds.

JAVELIN: Oregon Tech made their mark in the javelin taking two of the three podium spots as expected. OIT’s Alex Conley, currently second in the nation in the event, earned the win with her fourth throw recording a hurl of 43.71 meters. UBC’s Giovanna Janes finished as the runner up with a throw of 42.28 meters. Wrapping up the top three was the Owl’s Aarika Brooks with a throw of 41.80 meters. The four top throwers all registered “A” Standards.
 
5,000 METERS: College of Idaho claimed three of the top four spots in the 5,000-meter run. Kahea Figueira set a new facility record at Banner Bank Track finishing with a time of 17.56.42 earning All-CCC honors and 10 team points for the Yotes. In second SOU’s Alejandra Lopez finished with a time of 17:59.03. The Yotes swiped the last spot on the podium as well thanks to Ellyse Tingelstad who finished with a time of 18:11.24.
 
4x400-METER RELAY: UBC expanded upon their lead in the final event of the day. The squad of Cayla Smith, Emma Rastad, Mackenzie Campbell and Hanna Sobkowich finished with a time of 3:54.78 seconds, good for an “A” Standard. EOU snuck in with a second-place finish in the final three meters of the race finishing with a time of 3:55.15 (“B” Standard). In third, LCSC posted a third place time of 3:55.24 second (“B” Standard).


The NAIA Track and Field Championships will take place May 24-26 at Indiana Wesleyan University in
Marion, Indiana.
