ASHLAND, OR – #2 Menlo Women's Wrestling made the trek up to Oregon to face off the #5 Southern Oregon Raiders on Friday evening. The Oaks looked sharp as they dominated SOU, walking away victorious by a score of 39-8. Menlo is now 8-3 overall this season and continues to perform well under pressure against highly ranked teams!
Many New Oaks in Win Column
After a fast pin from Angelique Cervantes (101), back to back forfeits from both teams would give the Oaks a 10-5 lead going into the 123 weight class. Haley Narahara has been growing stronger after injury and returns to the mats showing no weakness. The Oak was able to tally 4 back to back exposures after being up 2-0 to end the match in a 10-0 tech fall. Freshman Valynn Kwan (130) laid down the pin in just 21 seconds to make the team score 19-5 over SOU. Samantha Barragan (136) would continue the winning energy after a 10-0 tech fall in 27 seconds. Another Menlo newbie to add a win under her belt was freshman Alana Ontiveros (143). Just under two minutes into the first period, Ontiveros was defending a shot taken from Stockwell of SOU when she overpowered the Raider onto her back and held the pin. SOU took the 155 weight class to make the score 29-8. Nikita Dhaliwal (170) and Neila Fritts (191) each were victorious over their Raider opponents by pin to finish the dual with a team score of 39-8.
The Oaks and the Raiders are the top two teams in the Cascade Conference so tonight was a big step in the right direction to continue their reign in the conference. There were appearances from some new faces for Menlo who all looked sharp and well prepared. Head Coach Michael Ayala is now 8-3 well into the 2023-24 season and has proven that any Oak on the roster is more than capable to win on the mat!
