Cascade Connects: Track & Field Preview (Multis)

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The first weekend of the 2024 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track and Field Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, is set to begin today.
 
The Multi Events Championships kick off at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore., with the rest of the championship meet taking place at Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Ore., on May 10-11.
 
Live results will be updated HERE. Awards will be presented at the full meet at OIT in May. The top three finishers in each event will earn All-CCC honors and the top eight will accumulate points that go towards their teams' totals at the final meet.
 
The men’s decathlon begins at 10 a.m. PT with the 100-meter dash as the first of the 10 events. The long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter events follow on the same day, starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous event.
 
Friday gets started with the 100-meter high hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, and javelin, before the 1500-meter closes out the events.
 
Nine men are set to compete in the multi events. Four repeat contenders are looking to improve from the last championship, including Eastern Oregon senior Israel Miles. He finished 4th last year and is currently leading the conference and sitting at No. 10 in the NAIA with 5944 points. Egidio Cantarella is a senior from University of British Columbia is also ranked nationally, at 19th with a score of 5590. Christian Bothwell of Lewis-Clark State College, last year’s champion, will be competing in his first decathlon of the season.
 
On the women’s side, the heptathlon is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m., beginning with the 100-meter hurdles. The high jump, shot put and 200-meter follow on the first day, starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous event.
 
Friday opens with the long jump, before the athletes compete in the javelin and close with the 800-meter run.
 
14 women qualified for a tough heptathlon championship with seven holding spots in the top 20 of the NAIA this season. Leading the conference is the reigning champion, UBC senior Rebecca Dutchak who just claimed the top spot in the nation last week with 5029 points.
 
Next is EOU sophomore Lizzy Grandle who finished 3rd at the conference tournament last year.
Currently, she is ranked 5th with 4486 points and is followed close behind by Oregon Tech senior, Ally Odell who is sitting in 6th with 4428 points. Mountie junior Sammy Conley landed in 9th with 4207 points.
 
Also competing is The Evergreen State College’s Corona Parker (4054) who is 16th in the NAIA along with UBC’s Alessandra Ionescu-Zanetti (3979) and Sarah Pimblett (3840) who landed 18th and 20th in the nation, respectively. Abi Stevens of OIT, last year’s runner up, will be competing in her first heptathlon of the season.
