COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Facing some adverse weather in the Washington area throughout the day, the Corban University Men's Golf team was able to complete the opening round of the Walla Walla Invitational, hosted by Walla Walla University, with one of their student-athletes exceeding the course expectations to lead the Warriors into a day two comeback bid.
"We didn't have our best round today as we dealt with a little wind in our face and too many lip-out putts," said Corban head coach Charlie Marshall. "Max played very consistent today and has a good shot at taking medalist honors tomorrow."
Junior Max McDonough found himself in multiple opportunities to take the first round lead among the four teams on day one, but eventually settled for a 74 scorecard with three birdies to sit in third overall out of the 28-man field.
Following McDonough in the individual standings was sophomore Brayden Sparkman in 17th with a round of 80, freshman David Harvey in a two-way tie for 21st with an 83 mark, then freshmen Ben Winans and Owen Heath in 26th and 27th with two strokes separating the two at 88 and 90, respectively.
As a team, the Navy and Gold will look to climb the leaderboards tomorrow, as they're currently slotted in fourth place with a combined score of 37 strokes over par, 16 behind the next team up, Multnomah. College of Idaho and the tournament host Wolves are locked in a two-way draw for the team lead with both programs sitting at +19 overall.
McDonough and the Warriors as a complete unit will continue into the second and final round of the Walla Walla Invitational looking to secure a top three team finish at the Wine Valley Golf Club.
