Beacons Fall to Wildcats in NAIA Opener

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Bushnell University was unable to come back from an early deficit on Monday morning, falling to Louisiana Christian University 6-4 in game one of the NAIA Opening Round Lawrenceville Bracket at Georgia Gwinnett College.

An early call time on the East Coast was made even earlier as tournament officials were attempting to save the schedule with poor weather expected later in the day, giving the Beacons a 6:00 am first pitch in West Coast time, 9:00 am locally.

The Wildcats were able to post four runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth for all of their scoring, and Bushnell slowly chipped away, scoring single runs in the second, fifth, sixth, and seventh.

Jordan Wilson went 2-for-4 in the game with a solo homer in the seventh and Reece Carganilla added two RBI in the loss.

Austin Wolfe (5-2) took the loss for the Beacons, giving up four earned on six hits. He struck out seven batters through four innings of work, but his elevated pitch count forced an early exit. Blake Stavros and Trevor Hammond did some strong clean up work to give the Bushnell bats a chance, allowing just one hit over the final 4.1 scoreless innings.

LCU’s Cy Fontenot (5-2) got the win, giving up two runs on three hits in five innings of work.

The Beacons drop into the losers bracket and will be back in action at 11:00 am EST on Tuesday, taking on the winner of game two between Faulkner and Ottawa University of Arizona.
