LE MARS, Iowa – Isabella Barquet fired off one of the lowest rounds of the day to put herself in a tie for fifth after the first two rounds of the Northwest Iowa National Invitational on Monday at Willow Creek Golf Course. The No. 20 LC State Women's Golf team sits in third, ahead of two ranked opponents, heading into Tuesday's final round.
LC State sits nine strokes back of No. 11 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) while No. 5 Texas Wesleyan leads the tournament by 15 strokes. The Warriors lead fourth-place Kansas Wesleyan by 16 strokes and fifth-place No. 18 OUAZ (Ariz.) by 21. No. 25 Morningside (Iowa) is in sixth.
"Proud of the way the women battled today," Head Coach Zach Anderson said. "With 36 holes on the docket, the mindset has to be locked in all day. These ladies never wavered, and our play showed that. We competed with top-15 teams and just got better as the day went on. The work is not done with 18 more tomorrow to prove we can carry our own out west."
After a 4-over, 75 in the first round, Barquet shot a 70 on the par 71 course. She totaled four birdies in the afternoon session to outweigh her three bogies. Junior Dallis Shockey shot matching 74s to sit 6-over through two rounds and is tied for 10th.
Freshmen Giulia Belfontali and Jane Barry are tied for 14th after scores of 76 in the first round and 74 in the second to each sit 8-over, 150. Barry birdied seven holes throughout her two rounds and has gotten better in each round she has played in dating back to last week's season-opener. Belfontali also greatly improved in her second collegiate tournament as both first years shot under 80 for the first time.
Chase Caruso is tied for 33rd after an 84 in the first round and 79 in the second.
