TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 11-ranked Southern Oregon women's wrestling team kept hope alive for a top-five finish by going 2-1 during Day 1 of the NWCA-NAIA National Dual Championships on Friday at the UNI-Dome.
The Raiders overcame a 20-12 deficit by ending their first-round dual with three consecutive pins to upset No. 8 Doane (Neb.), 27-20. They fell 34-9 to No. 2 Providence (Mont.) in the quarterfinals and got revenge against No. 14 Evergreen (Wash.) with a 31-16 victory in their first consolation dual.
Top-ranked Lillian Gradillas-Flores (207 pounds) and No. 3-ranked Kat Hingano (180) were both perfect in three matches and nailed down SOU's defeat of Doane. The Raiders trailed by 11 points midway through the contest before winning four of the final five matches by fall: unranked Makayla Correa (138) knocked off No. 18 Payton Weese in the first round, Quilaztli Miguel-Lapham (160) and Hingano (180) finished off their opponents in the first, and the No. 1 Gradillas-Flores (207) pinned No. 3 Jessica Rodriguez in 5:22 to seal the outcome.
Providence, which featured top-10 individuals in all but one weight class, won eight of 10 matches against SOU. Hingano and Gradillas-Flores stopped the bleeding with a decision and a technical fall, respectively.
The Raiders also had to come back against Evergreen, which defeated them 26-19 last month. The Geoducks were up 11-7 until No. 11 Jade Morales (131) notched a pin of No. 18 Erica Grant to swing the lead for good. Hingano and Holland Wieber (145) went on to record two more pins while Correa and Gradillas-Flores tacked on technical falls. Deandra Meza (117) added a fall earlier in the dual.
The tournament – which features 14 of the top-15 teams in the NAIA coaches' poll – pits SOU against Indiana Tech at 8:30 a.m. PT Saturday. The winner will face No. 5 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) or No. 9 Texas Wesleyan for fifth place at 11:30 a.m., and the losers will wrestle for seventh at the same time.
