EOU Men’s Basketball Throttles Lions 118-88 in CCC Opener

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team earned its first Cascade Collegiate Conference win of the year, defeating Multnomah 118-88 at Quinn Coliseum on Friday evening.

In what was expected to be a high-scoring game, the matchup did not disappoint as both teams played at a high pace for most of the game. The Mountaineers (6-2, 1-0 CCC) used their clear size advantage to dominate the paint, scoring an incredible 80 points when inside the rectangle.

Big men Landon Jones and Jarek Schetzle led the inside attack for EOU and were nearly unstoppable for the Lions' defense. Jones had a career-high of 31 points, making 14-of-20 shots for 70 percent shooting. He also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and dished out five assists.

Schetzle also had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in just 21 minutes on the floor. He shot 11-for-16 and finished with two blocks. Junior Max McCullough added 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Junior Josh Brown scored 12 points followed by sophomores Zane Wright and Kobi Gardea with nine and eight, respectively. All 10 EOU players who touched the floor had at least two points.

The Mounties were a very efficient 52-for-88 from the field (59.1%) and made 11-of-24 three attempts. In a high-paced game, both teams played extremely clean with just 17 fouls between the pair. Each team reached the free throw line just five times.

Multnomah made 16 three-pointers to hang close with EOU for some time, but the inside presence eventually helped the Mounties pull away in the second half. The Lions were outscored 65-40 in the second half after trailing by only five at half time.

Justin Martin finished with 33 points on 13-for-27 shooting for the Lions. Forrest Smith had 17 points and four boards and Zach Richardson added 12 points.

The Mountaineers' high-scoring attack currently leads the nation in scoring average at 103.9 points per game. They average nearly eight more points per game than the second-highest team. Multnomah ranks fourth at 94.8 PPG.

EOU will next play on Saturday against Warner Pacific at home at 7:30 p.m.
