ASHLAND – Huntington (Ind.) star Zach Goodline staged a takeover against Southern Oregon on Saturday night in the final game of the Flagship Inn Classic.
Goodline scored 22 of his 35 points in the second half, shooting 7-of-9 and hitting all four of his 3-point attempts after the break, in igniting the Foresters as they defeated the Raiders 100-88 at Lithia Motors Pavilion. The senior guard, an NAIA All-America honorable mention recipient last season, also totaled eight assists and four steals.
With the Foresters up 60-57 and 16 minutes to go, Goodline scored every point during a 10-0 run – turning in a worthy follow-up to his 34-point performance on Friday against No. 6 William Jessup. The Foresters retained control the rest of the way, eventually going ahead by 20.
Lane Sparks added 21 points for Huntington, which improved to 4-1 after receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 preseason poll.
The Raiders fell to 2-2. Will Graves scored a team-high 13 points off the bench, where SOU also got nine from Mason Whittaker on 3-of-4 shooting. Four Raider starters – Dominic McGarvey (11 points, 5 rebounds), Atmar Mundu (11 points), Tez Allen (10 points, 6 assists) and Tre Carlisle (10 points, 4 assists) – also hit double figures.
SOU shot 50 percent for the second game in a row, but the Foresters checked in at 54 percent and 11-of-21 from 3. The offensive fireworks started early, as the teams combined to make their first 10 field-goal attempts.
The Raiders, who upset William Jessup in the first game of the Classic, are home again on Tuesday to face Simpson (Calif.) at 6 p.m.
