SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – It took a change of venue and six extra days of preparation, but the RV Mustangs of The Master's University was finally able to overcome the stifling defense and fast-paced offensive playstyle of the Corban University Men's Basketball team and flip a 12-point loss last weekend in Glendale, Arizona into an 11-point home victory, 70-59, tonight inside The MacArthur Center.
"Our guys played really hard tonight, but accumulating twenty-one turnovers and missing twelve free throws makes things really difficult to go into another team's home court and beat them twice in a row," Warriors' head coach Wayne Mendezona detailed following their contest this evening. "There were a lot of positive signs that show this team has the potential to be really good, but it's going to take a complete buy in from every single member of the team for a complete forty minutes per game if we want to create something special this season."
The Mustangs (4-3) claimed the first seven points of the contest and never trailed in their revenge win over the Warriors (1-2) after both teams' most recent outing having concluded in the exact opposite fashion, yet the Navy and Gold were able to keep the score within striking distance for over 80% of the game before The Master's pulled away late. Another porous shooting day for Corban from beyond the arc (1-for-7) and just 8-for-20 from the free throw line, alongside a 20-11 margin in turnovers resulted in a handful of missed opportunities that they'll attempt to remedy before their next matchup in southern California tomorrow night.
Another near double-double outing from redshirt junior center Tj Zimmermann wasn't quite enough to power the Navy and Gold to a true road win over The Master's, as Zimmermann finished 6-for-9 from the field with 14 points and eight rebounds, yet committed nine turnovers after the Mustangs fully committed to forcing other Warriors into making big plays after Zimmermann dominated them in their previous matchup. Junior guard Joe Gould added 11 points, while senior guard Payton Meyers scored ten points and hauled in three boards.
TMU saw big scoring performances from guards Avery Jackson and Quincy Phillips power the hometown team to victory, with Jackson scoring a game-high 18 points while Phillips fell a rebound shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Guards Nate Boakye and Skyler Scull scored 13 and 12 points off the bench, respectively.
The Warriors six-game road trip to begin the 2025-26 regular season continues tomorrow evening, as the Warriors of Life Pacific University (3-2) will host Corban men's basketball at 6pm in San Dimas, California.
